Ella went rigid, staring up at David. “What did you just say? Whose baby did you say it is?”
David let out a cold laugh. “Do I really need to spell it out for you? You know exactly whose baby it is. It’s Wyatt’s.”
Ella’s lashes fluttered. She’d never wanted David to find out about the baby, but now that he knew, she couldn’t let him believe the wrong thing.
“David, listen to me. This baby isn’t Wyatt’s. It’s yours.”
For a moment, David just stared at her. Then a slow, mocking smile spread across his face.
“Why are you smiling?” Ella’s voice trembled. “I’m serious. The baby really is yours. I—”
“That’s enough, Ella.” David cut her off, grabbing her chin with his hand. “You’re pregnant with Wyatt’s kid and you have the nerve to tell me it’s mine? What do you take me for? Do you really think I’m that easy to fool? Or do you just feel sorry for me?”
“I…”
“Listen, Ella. I don’t care about this baby. I don’t care who the father is.”
Ella’s heart turned to stone. The words she wanted to say got stuck in her throat. With the way he was acting, what was the point in trying to explain? He didn’t want the baby at all.
She pushed against his chest. “If that’s how you feel, Mr. Harmon, let me go. You can leave now.”
The coldness in her eyes made something inside David snap. He’d felt the same way earlier at the cemetery, when she’d looked at him like that.
“Is Wyatt really that important to you, Ella?”
“Yes. No matter how many times you ask, Wyatt means more to me than you ever will.”
She said it without hesitation, like it was the plain truth. David pressed his tongue to his cheek and let out a bitter laugh.
David tapped her cheek. “What, you’re playing innocent now? A virtuous little angel? Funny, you always wanted to use protection when you were with me, but with Wyatt, you let him do whatever he wanted. You really are a hypocrite, aren’t you?”
Ella didn’t want to argue anymore. “Mr. Harmon, I want you to leave. Right now.”
David leaned in and pressed his mouth to hers, rough and unforgiving.
Ella froze at the kiss, shocked he’d do this now, of all times. Had he kissed Jessa too? Wasn’t last night enough for him? She struggled, but he was solid as a wall, completely immovable.
She opened her mouth and bit down on his lip, hard.
David didn’t back off. He took advantage, deepening the kiss, his tongue sweeping through her mouth, possessive and demanding. The taste of blood quickly spread between them.
Finally, David pulled away and wrapped his arm around her waist, dragging her toward the sofa.
