Maureen frowned, clearly confused. “What plan? Jessa’s with Mr. Harmon now, and Ella’s mixed up in this too. What could you possibly do to save her?”
Peter stayed silent.
Maureen stepped closer, her voice rising. “If you really have a plan, then use it. What are you waiting for?”
Peter didn’t answer. He just turned around and walked away, leaving everyone hanging.
Rachel hurried after him, calling out, “Wait, honey!”
Maureen tried to follow too, but Grandma Jill blocked her path. “Maureen, just stay here.”
Maureen stopped, baffled. “Grandma, why can’t I go? What’s going on?”
She glanced at Grandma Jill, then at Logan and Ruby. There was something in their faces she didn’t like. “You all look like you know something I don’t. Are you hiding something from me?”
Logan shook his head. “Maureen, please stop asking. This is about Jessa’s past.”
Maureen blinked. “Her past? What do you mean? Isn’t Jessa Peter and Rachel’s daughter?”
Ruby squeezed Maureen’s hand gently. “Maureen, let it go. Jessa’s lost whatever cards she had left. Right now, her life is hanging by a thread. Everything depends on Peter’s next move. If he chooses right, our family could seriously rise to a whole new level.”
Maureen shook her head, feeling lost. “I don’t get it at all.”
Grandma Jill stood, her eyes shining with strange determination. “You don’t have to understand, Maureen. Just remember, the Irvine family can’t be brought down. This could be the moment we survive the storm and come out stronger than ever.”
Maureen stared at her, stunned into silence.
