Was this karma? Was she just getting what she deserved?
No. She didn’t think so.
David couldn’t stand to look at Jessa for even a second longer. He turned and walked away, his strides long and determined.
He was leaving.
He couldn’t leave. Not like this.
Jessa dropped to the floor, her sobs echoing in the empty room. “David, don’t go! Why are you doing this to me? Ever since you married Ella, you’ve changed. You’ve loved her all along, haven’t you? Now that you know she’s the girl from your past, you couldn’t wait to throw me away. How can you do this to me?”
No matter how loud she begged, David didn’t look back. She couldn’t even get him to spare her a glance.
Aiden stood nearby, watching Jessa break down. “Ms. Irvine, Mr. Harmon is right. You really brought this on yourself.”
Jessa glared up at him. She knew where Aiden’s heart lay. He’d always favored Ella. The resentment twisted inside her, making her fists clench tight. “Why? Why do you all like Ella so much? What does she have that I don’t?”
Aiden didn’t hesitate. “Ms. Irvine, you shouldn’t be asking what you’re missing. The truth is, you don’t have anything that can compare to Ms. Irvine.”
Jessa’s nails dug into her palms, pain flaring. The humiliation burned, leaving her shaking.
Aiden walked out of the room.
Everyone was gone now. Jessa was alone in the tiny, dark room. Her face throbbed, hot and swollen from the slaps. Blood filled her mouth, and her whole body ached from the beating by those bodyguards. Every part of her hurt, like she was about to break apart.
She curled up in the corner, trembling. Once upon a time, David had put her on a pedestal. Now, he’d kicked her straight down to rock bottom. She couldn’t accept it.
Fear crept in, squeezing her chest. Where were her parents? Her grandmother? They had to come for her. They had to save her.
...
Three days went by in a blur. The second deadline for the Irvine family had arrived. Today, they were supposed to confess everything at Jon’s grave, Ella’s father.
