Jessa had always known it, somewhere deep inside, but she’d never let herself believe it. “I’m the one who’s destined for greatness. Ella’s just some nobody from the countryside. How could she possibly compare to me?”
David’s eyes turned cold. “Who told you it was okay to insult Ella?”
A bodyguard stepped forward and slapped Jessa hard across the face.
The sound echoed in the room.
Her head whipped to the side, but the hits kept coming. Another slap, then another, each one landing harder than the last.
Before long, both of Jessa’s cheeks were puffy and red, blood seeping from the corner of her mouth.
“Please, stop! It hurts!” Jessa cried, her voice shaking as she begged.
David lifted his hand slightly, and the bodyguard stepped back.
Her knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the floor. Jessa had been spoiled her whole life, never touched like this. Now her ears were ringing, and her teeth felt loose.
David stared down at her, his expression icy. “I don’t want to hear you say another word against Ella. Consider this your warning.”
Jessa looked at him, desperate. He sat there in his black suit, looking perfectly composed, but there was a dangerous edge to him that made her tremble.
The way he looked at her now was so dark and cold, Jessa felt a chill run through her whole body.
She crawled across the floor and grabbed onto David’s leg. “David, please, don’t do this to me. I can’t lose you. You have no idea how scared I am of losing you.”
