David looked Moss right in the eye. “I’ll say it again. I’m not marrying your daughter, Jessa. The person I love is Ella.”
Jessa’s face fell, her hurt obvious. “David!”
David didn’t hesitate. He reached out and pulled Ella away from Moss, holding her close. She stumbled, but he caught her, his arms steady and warm around her waist.
He bent his head, his voice gentle. “Ella, are you okay?”
Ella shook her head, almost smiling. “I’m fine.”
“Let’s get out of here,” David said.
Ella nodded. “Okay.”
She meant to walk on her own, but David scooped her up before she could even take a step. Ella’s eyelashes fluttered in surprise.
“Hold on to my neck,” David told her.
Ella looped her arms around him, letting him carry her away without a word.
Lilly watched the whole thing, then turned to Jessa with a playful smirk. “So what if you’re a billionaire’s daughter? You can’t even keep your own fiancé.”
Jessa was fuming. “You—”
“Relax, Jessa. Don’t get so worked up. You’ve got that heart condition, remember? If you get too upset, Ella won’t treat you,” Lilly teased.
Jessa stared at her, speechless.
Lilly stuck out her tongue and dashed off. “Mr. Harmon, wait for me!”
Jessa knew he was right. She’d met so many men, but none matched David. He had it all—talent, charm, character.
“I don’t want anyone else, Dad. I just want David,” she insisted.
Moss sighed. “Jessa…”
She clung to his arm, her voice soft and pleading. “Dad, if you really want me to be happy, you’ll help me win David back. The Wade and Harmon families already have a marriage arrangement. David was supposed to be mine.”
There was no way Jessa would just give up on David and let Ella take her place. In her mind, a girl had to marry well. She might be a billionaire’s daughter, but if Ella became Mrs. Harmon, she’d still lose.
Ten years from now, when David was at the top of his game, she didn’t want to be looking up at Ella. She just wouldn’t let that happen.
Rachel spoke up, her voice soft but firm. “Mr. Wade, you might not know this, but Jessa and Mr. Harmon have known each other for years. Jessa truly loves him. No one could ever take his place in her heart.”
