Ella and Wyatt made their way through the airport terminal, trailing their suitcases behind them. Fiona and Lilly had come along to say goodbye.
Fiona clung to Ella's arm, her eyes shining with worry. “Ella, are you really going to leave?”
Ella nodded, trying to keep her voice steady. “I’m not gone for good, Fiona. This is just for now. I’ll come back.”
Fiona’s hand drifted to Ella’s belly, her touch gentle. “Right now, everything has to be about the baby. I’m still waiting for my chance to be an aunt, you know.”
Lilly wrapped Ella in a tight hug. “You’re just leaving like this? David has no idea you’re going, and he doesn’t even know about the baby. Maybe you should wait for him?”
Lilly had always taken Ella’s side, but David was her cousin. This just didn’t feel like the ending they deserved.
Ella gave her a calm smile. “Lilly, whatever we had is over. Sometimes you just have to let things go.”
“Alright, but promise you’ll take care of yourself,” Lilly said, squeezing her tighter.
Watching the three of them say their goodbyes, Wyatt tried to lighten the mood with a grin. “Come on, it’s not like you’ll never see each other again. Flights are so quick these days. Don’t make it sound like the end of the world. Ella, we should get moving.”
Ella let go of Lilly and Fiona, giving them one last look. “Take care of yourselves. I’m going now.”
“Bye, Ella.” Lilly and Fiona waved, their voices thick with emotion.
Wyatt lifted the luggage and led Ella toward the gate.
Even with all the pain this city had brought her, Ella still felt a sting of regret as she left. She’d spent four unforgettable years here, and every memory with David was tangled up in this place.
Suddenly, her phone rang, the familiar melody cutting through her thoughts. She glanced down. David’s name lit up her screen.
He was calling her.
Ella stared at his name, torn. She didn’t pick up.
The butler answered, his voice polite but firm. “After Miss Wade met you at the department store, she was poisoned. She’s still unconscious.”
Ella blinked in disbelief. Jessa had been poisoned?
A hint of a smile played on her lips. “So, Mr. Wade thinks I did it?”
The butler didn’t give anything away. “I can’t say for sure if you’re responsible. ButMr. Wade has asked you to come to the Irvine estate and help cure Miss Jessa. You’ll only be allowed to leave Rockford Bay when she’s safe.”
Ella could hardly believe it. She never imagined Moss and Jessa would be the ones to keep her here.
What kind of fate was this?
Wyatt stepped between Ella and the butler, his voice cool. “Mr. Wade really knows how to throw his weight around. What if Ella refuses? What if she wants to leave Rockford Bay?”
The butler smiled, unbothered. “Mr. Wade has decided Miss Irvine can’t leave. No plane will take off from Rockford Bay for her. Unless, of course, she can grow wings and fly herself out.”
