Just then, David showed up behind her. “Ella.”
She turned to face him.
“Ella, the chicken soup is ready. You’re pregnant and you haven’t eaten anything yet. Come on, let’s get you some.”
Ella wanted to say no, but David gently took her hand and led her away before she could protest.
The maid watched Ella leave, letting out a big sigh of relief. She turned around and saw Rachel standing there.
“Ma’am, I did what you asked. Ms. Irvine and Mr. Harmon have gone downstairs.”
Rachel nodded. “Good work. Don’t say a word about any of this to anyone. You know what will happen if you do.”
The maid’s face went pale. “I understand, ma’am.”
Feeling reassured, Rachel hurried into the room.
On the table, she spotted a syringe filled with blood. This was the sample Ella had drawn from Moss.
Perfect. She’d found it.
Rachel pulled out a vial of her own blood from her pocket and quickly swapped it for Moss'.
With everything done, Rachel finally let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Jessa’s secret was safe for now.
She allowed herself a tiny, satisfied smile and started to leave.
But her steps faltered. Someone else was there. Peter had walked in.
“Why did you switch the blood?” Peter asked quietly. “Mr. Wade is Jessa’s biological father. Only a close relative’s blood can save her. If you swapped his blood, does that mean… you’re Jessa’s closest relative? Are you... her real mother?”
Rachel was terrified. “No, it’s not like that, honey, please let me explain…”
Peter held up the syringe. “What is there to explain? Rachel, what have you been hiding from me?”
“I get it now,” Peter went on, his voice low. “Ella is supposed to be your biological daughter, but you’ve never acted like it. You’re always cold and even cruel to her. But with Jessa, you treat her like she’s your own. People always said you spoiled Jessa because you loved me so much, but that’s not it, is it? Rachel, just tell me, is Jessa really your daughter? Did you switch Ella and Jessa at birth?”
All these years, Peter had seen how distant Rachel was with Ella. He’d always wondered about it, but he never dug deeper.
Now, after watching her swap the blood with his own eyes, all the doubts and strange details suddenly made sense.
He stared at Rachel, hardly able to believe it. “Rachel, did you pull off a baby swap? Is Jessa really your daughter? Is Ella actually Mr. Wade’s daughter? Is Ella the real heiress?”
