“Mom,” David cut her off, “didn’t Jessa tell you? Ella is actually Isabella.”
Mrs. Harmon blinked, stunned.
Everyone in their social circle knew the name Isabella. She was famous, almost legendary. But Mrs. Harmon had never connected that name to Ella.
“So, Mom, Ella didn’t come here because of me. She was invited to the Emerald Banquet. We just ran into each other by chance. Ella’s never needed to depend on a man. In these three years, she’s only made her life better.”
The truth was, Mrs. Harmon actually didn’t hate Ella. Even after all this time, when she thought about her, she still remembered those bright, clever eyes. Now, realizing Ella was the Isabella everyone admired, she felt a strange mix of surprise and awe. Ella, standing beside David, was more stunning and accomplished than ever.
Mrs. Harmon watched her son. Her heart twisted for him. Ella was extraordinary. What man wouldn’t fall for her?
But David needed to move on.
“David, honey…”
“Mom, I know what you want to say. There’s nothing left between Ella and me. I saw her daughter today.”
Mrs. Harmon’s eyes widened in shock.
David gave a small, bittersweet smile. “Her daughter is beautiful. Sweet and gentle, just like Ella. She’s Ella and Wyatt’s little girl. They’re a real family now, the three of them. I don’t have a place in her life anymore.”
He turned and headed upstairs, leaving Mrs. Harmon watching his lonely figure disappear from sight.
Lilly sounded excited. “Ella, you’re in the Capital? That’s amazing! I’m here too. We have to meet up. Bring Lola. I have so many gifts for her.”
The Lynch family’s roots were in the Capital, but Lilly had only moved back a year ago. That was when Jace’s younger sister, Victoria, got accepted to Crestwood College.
Victoria had done so well in the past three years. She’d won a math competition in her sophomore year in high school, then gone abroad and taken first place in the international contest. That same year, she started at Crestwood College.
Lilly had treated Victoria like her own sister ever since. When Victoria moved to Crestwood, Lilly’s parents also relocated to the Capital to help take care of her, even though Victoria was so independent now that she barely needed any help.
The thought of seeing an old friend made Ella smile. “Of course, Lilly. I’ll bring Lola and we’ll head over right away.”
