Lilly’s eyes were rimmed with red as she looked at him. “Jason, you could’ve just told me, you know.”
Jason studied her delicate face. “Back then, you were this rich girl living in a perfect world, and I was just some broke guy with nothing to offer. I didn’t deserve you. I couldn’t drag you into my mess.”
Lilly pressed her face into his neck, voice muffled. “You’re such an idiot.”
He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. “That’s all behind us now.”
She searched his face, her eyes softening. “Then what happened to your face? And if the marriage was fake, why didn’t you come looking for me these last three years?”
His expression changed, eyes growing darker. “You really don’t know what happened to my face?”
Lilly blinked, confused. “What are you talking about? I don’t get it.”
Jason’s lips pressed together, but he didn’t answer.
Lilly’s worry grew. “Why won’t you tell me? What happened? I—”
A ringtone cut through the tension, making them both jump. Lilly glanced at her phone. Lucas’s name flashed on the screen.
Jason noticed too. “Lucas is calling.”
Lilly sighed and answered.
Lucas’s voice came through, urgent. “Lilly, where are you? I need to see you.”
She frowned, annoyed. “Lucas, why are you calling me this late… mmph—”
Jason suddenly leaned in, covering her mouth with his, cutting her off completely. Lilly’s eyes widened in surprise as Jason eased her down onto the seat, his body pressing close.
She tried to push him away. “Stop… I’m on the phone with Lucas…”
Before she could say more, Jason snatched the phone out of her hand. He spoke directly into the receiver, voice low and steady. “Lucas, it’s me.”
Lucas went silent for a moment. “Jason? So you really are with her!”
Jason didn’t waste time. “Whatever you want can wait. She’s with me right now. Call her tomorrow.”
He hung up, tossed the phone aside, and turned all his attention back to Lilly. His gaze locked on hers as he kissed her again. “You and Lucas… is that over?”
Lilly hesitated. She and Lucas had never even started, so what was there to end?
Jason looked at her, eyes fierce. “Lilly, we’ve already slept together. You’re not planning to just walk away and leave me hanging, are you?”
She stared at him. Take responsibility for him? What did that even mean?
Jason grinned, a teasing spark in his eyes. “You slept with me, so don’t even think about running. Be with me, Lilly. Say you will.”
