“What did you want to talk about?”
“I… I wanted to ask about your face. Lucas said he knew what happened. He told me if I met him, he’d tell me everything.”
Jason paused, looking over at Lilly. “So you went to see Lucas just to find out about my face?”
“Of course. What else did you think? I didn’t know Lucas was such a creep. He cut off a piece of steak and tried to feed it to me. He said he’d only tell me if I ate it. I didn’t, not even a bite.”
Seeing the way Lilly talked about Lucas, her disgust so obvious, Jason felt his anger start to fade. So that’s what it was.
Still…
He looked at her, searching her face. “You really don’t know what happened to me?”
Lilly shook her head. “No, I don’t. Why do you keep asking me that? Was I supposed to know?”
Jason was quiet for a few seconds. Now it all made sense. Lilly hadn’t been involved three years ago. That meant it had to be Lucas.
“Jason, what actually happened to you? Will you tell me?”
“Three years ago, I got hurt during a police bust. We caught that drug lord, but I was badly injured. I tried to find you, but someone grabbed me, dragged me into a car, and threw acid on my face. I was left disfigured, then they crashed the car off a cliff with me inside.”
Lilly gasped, her eyes wide. “Wait, what? Someone did that to you? You were in a car crash too?”
She shook her head, still stunned. “Jason, I’m so sorry. I had no idea you went through all of that.”
“It’s okay,” he said quietly. “It’s over now.”
He placed his hands on her shoulders, looking right into her eyes. “I’m not trying to control you. I just don’t want you meeting Lucas in private. I promise, I won’t meet with any other women either. We belong to each other, just us. Lilly, I’m serious about this. Can you be serious about me too?”
He was asking, really asking, if she could be just as serious.
Her lashes fluttered and a smile curved her lips. She leaned in and kissed him, soft and sweet.
Jason froze for a second, caught off guard.
He looked down and found her smiling up at him, her eyes shining. “Jason, listen to me. I am very, very serious about you.”
Jason’s heart completely melted. “Be a good girl to me, princess.”
He bent down and kissed her, unable to hold back any longer.
