The Golden Lycans (Ella) novel Chapter 60

Will’s Truth Pt.2

“It was little bursts here and there and they left little ripples. It felt dulled, like it was being suppressed. Now, of course, I know you had been, by your talisman. One evening, on November the nineteenth, there was an intense burst. It overwhelmed me, and the ripples it produced were more like shock waves. You had come alive and like a beacon, like a lighthouse in vast darkness, I could now find you. I had no idea until that point that you were a person, but it turned out, Erebus did and he immediately instructed me to go to you. I knew exactly where you were, so I put in a transfer to Exton immediately.”

I regard him skeptically for a moment.

“Why did you need to find me? What does this other hybrid want with me?” I ask, finishing my coffee. Will looks as though he’d rather not answer this.

“He wants your light. Your Fae magic was also once called light magic. A faerie was always said to be an innately good individual, having vast quantities of light within them. But, any person on the street could have a slither of light in their aura if they were a good person. Light is the good in the world, the power of positivity, good thought, good feeling, hope…all the good stuff. There is a desperate lack of light in the present world and that is largely due to the dramatic loss of light from the near extinction of the Fae. To be around someone, like you, is to feel positive…to feel joy, to feel warmth,” Will lists, his expression softening as he looksongingky toward me, “I had never felt so much peace, since I met you. To be next to you, after drowning in the darkness for so long, is to breathe.”

His gaze turns pained as he looks elsewhere, clearing his throat once again.

“But…Erebus doesn’t just want your normal power. He wants your power when it has been multiplied; when it’s at it’s peak. You see, Erebus wanted me to find you…and then he wanted me to encourage you to fall in love with me. A faerie in love is at least twice as powerful as a Faerie who isn’t. The measure of a faerie’s power, is dependant on the love she has for another, for the world, and the love they in turn have for her,” he says, avoiding eye contact with me and sighing wearily.

“Oh,” I utter breathlessly, is all I can manage in response, a bubble of sadness rising in me. I swallow hard; I needed to allow him to finish. This was Will and I knew I could trust him.

“But, his plan has backfired gloriously. I spent every day with you, getting to know you, helping you reach your power, teaching you how to use it. Fabian…he argued with me constantly about our task. I finally listened, when I realised that I had already failed. Because, Ella, / had fallen in love with you, not the other way around. But still, I was conflicted. Sacrifice you or sacrifice my family and the ten thousand people that make up the pack?”

He stops for a minute, getting off the sofa and walking over to one of the large windows, needing some distance from me in the wake of his emotive words.

“When we kissed and you reacted the way you did, it was the final wake up call. I knew that I was in love with you, thar I couldn’t let anything happen to you. I saw it in your aura for the first time; the incomplete bond, rejecting me. My heart fell, Ella, because being mate bonded to someone would mean you would be more powerful than Erebus could have ever anticipated. He’s a very powerful man and he’s deeply cunning and malicious. Whether he attacked my pack or not, I just couldn’t allow him to get that kind of power. I went to Headmaster Landry straight after what happened between us in the greenhouse, and I confessed everything, just like I am now. He confirmed my suspicion, that a Faerie in love is more powerful, but a faerie with a full mate bond with a Lycan, would be even more so, as had happened once before in the

past. Erebus has no idea that you have the potential to be more powerful than he could ever hope for, he c annot be allowed to get to you.”

I nod a little and look into his eyes.

“Yeah, I did figure out that day, that my power is very much linked to the bond. As soon as I realised what was happening with Austin, I felt it all come back to me, after thinking I’d lost it due to my head injury. That first day we met, I could only focus my magic after my mind drifted, and I thought about the kiss I’d shared with Austin that had prompted the talisman to break,” I admit quietly.

“The Headmaster sent me here to watch over you, he was right to. That rogue said it was a test and I think it was a test to see how powerful you now are,”

“Well I failed that test then!” I exclaim with a derisive laugh.

“Which is a good thing. He wants to take your power when it is at its peak,” Will says firmly, “until that time I think he will be watching and waiting. He’s a very patient man, at the very least.”

“So he knows where I am?”

“Unfortunately, yes, by the simple fact of being able to find where I am. He can track me easily because of the blood magic. I don’t know why he needed to enlist my help to find you, I’m fairly certain he could’ve done that himself. But in the end, once the talisman broke, it was fairly obvious where you were. That amo unt of light…it attracts attention if you’re looking for it. Maybe he’s too deep in the shadows to find you, I don’t know. What exactly happened on November nineteenth?”

He takes a seat at the end of the sofa again.

“November nineteenth was my seventeenth birthday and the evening of our winter formal. I was dancing with Austin and we missed once again…and that’s when the effects of the mate bond really started to kick in for me. The necklace burned my chest, Freya ripped it off me, and I watched the stone change colour and turn clear. Soon, I was on the floor, suddenly in excruciating pain, with two wings protruding from my back. People looked on at me, like I was some sort of freak,” I reply, feeling the emotions I had felt, all over again. I sit there in silence, wondering what to make of Will’s revelation. I knew on some level I ought to be

angry.

I knew that while his intentions were wrong at the beginning, he didn’t know it was for nefarious purposes at first, and he was a good person. Spending time with me and helping me had helped him too. I had seen it and I knew it, there was only good in him whether he could see that or not.

“I think you could beat him,” Will says suddenly. I look at him like he is crazy.

“What? Will you said so yourself, he took out an entire pack! I almost got killed by one rogue!” I cry.

Will shakes his head, his expression sombre, yet determined.

“If you fully bonded with Austin, you’d be strong enough. You’d be incredible,” he replies bluntly. I shot him a stern look.

“Well I don’t know if I want to!” I cry out suddenly, saying the words aloud for the first time and surprising the both of us. Will raises his eyebrows in shock at my words.

“Why wouldn’t you?” he asks, clearly intrigued. I run my hands through my hair in frustration.

“don’t know if I want that life. I’m only seventeen. I can’t fathom planning the rest of my life right now,” I said, throwing myself backwards onto the sofa once more.

“I understand that. We are born and raised with the pack mentality, with the notion of one day finding our mate at the forefront of our futures. The mate bond isn’t usually meant for other species, but it does happen from time to time. You don’t see or feel things the same way that we do,” Will says, leaning back into the cushions.

We sit there in silence for a minute or two, clearly both deep in thought.

“I’m not upset or angry at you, Will. I probably should be, but…I’m not. I’ve heard too much lately about a higher power and their plan…But if we were to take that literally, we could say that you definitely have a place in that plan,” I say, staring into the bottom of my coffee mug.

“I don’t follow,” Will says. I look back at him and contemplate my words.

“I felt the absolute need to leave this city, to go to the countryside, and I ended up coming to Exton. That had nothing to do with you. I have felt like something has been steering me toward Austin since I started, and that also has had nothing to do with you. This bond I have with him and our interactions that night broke the talisman and again, that was nothing to do with

you,” I begin. I scoot closer on the sofa and take his hand in mine.

“What you did do, Will? Was to arrive precisely when I needed you. When I literally thought to myself that I needed someone to help guide me when I felt so lost. Even before what you’ve just told me, I have felt and seen a change in you before we left for the holidays. You relaxed, you became more open, you smiled more; you’ve been so happy. You allowed yourself to be you for perhaps the first time in a long, long time. You went to Landry because you didn’t want any harm to come to me and because of that, you were here to save me from those rogues. If there is a higher plan being played out right now…you’re a big part of it, but it’s not in the way that you think at all. Your part in this is to do good, not bad. You are a GOOD person, Will. Through and through,” I explain, my heart warm as I look back at him.

Will looks rather stunned at my words.

“I don’t think anyone has ever said anything as kind to me, my whole life,” he admits quietly.
