I leave Ella’s house to pick up groceries and grab my things from the hostel. With a few days left before returning to school, we needed supplies, and I wasn’t about to let Ella leave the house until then-not with the threat of Erebus and his rogues still coming.

I’m still reeling from last night-opening up to her telling her everything, and finding nothing but kindness in return. She hadn’t been angry; instead, she had been thoughtful, understanding. I replay her words about my place in everything, wondering what comes next.

At the supermarket, I grab two premade pizzas-BBQ meat feast and four cheese margarita. Ella loves her carbs.

Her words about the mate bond linger in my mind, stirring something deep inside me. A rush of hope, raw and undeniable. I want Ella, and it kills me to know she will never be bonded to me. She isn’t Lycan- maybe she isn’t affected by the bond the same way we are. The idea of being a Luna doesn’t appeal to her like it does to she-wolves. To her, a pack isn’t unity, belonging-it’s like being asked to manage a company she has no interest in.

I grab a tub of cookie dough ice cream, then add bread, cheese, buttery croissants, and a small vanilla sponge cake before heading to checkout.

Outside, the cold bites against my skin. The snow is still crisp in places, untouched. I walk along the slushy footpath, lost in thought.

I can’t shake Ella’s aura from my mind. Her inner conflict about Austin is unmistakable, but every now and then, desire flickers through it-when we’re close, when she touches my hand, and especially on Christmas Day when she pulled me toward her in the garden.

I wonder if I’m part of that conflict. She admitted she feels something for me… but I’m still a Lycan, still destined to bond with someone else one day.

No wonder she feels a little miserable right now.

“Hmmm that smells amazing…what is it?” I ask eagerly, following my nose into the kitchen.

“Welsh Rarebit,” Will replies.

“Rabbit?” I repeat, a little disgusted.

“RAREbit,” he repeats louder, correcting me.

“It’s got one very Ella approved ingredient,” he teases, checking the inside of the oven and then shutting it again.

“Oh? That doesn’t really narrow it down.”

“Cheese, Will says simply.

“Ahh. Yes, very Ella approved,” I agree with a warm smile. Will smiles back and I am glad we are acting normally again after this morning.

“Will,” I say tentatively, he looks over at me with a kind smile on his face, “can we do….fire, after food?”

He looks very taken aback by my request and his expression is of immediate concern.

“If that’s what you really want, but you need to be absolutely sure. I warned you about what it can do.”

“It can’t mess me up more than I already am, surely?” I respond lightheartedly

“I’m serious Ella, it was very overwhelming when I first tried it.”

“I hear you, but I want to do it,” I assure him, “what if I get attacked again? I need it, Will.”

He sighs and looks at me with his brow tightly furrowed. He looks so worried, but he appears to relent, before his expression changes to concern again.

“Okay, that is a good point, but I did warn you,” he says.

An hour or so later we are stood in my little box garden. The snow that had laid is still relatively untouched aside from a few bird and cat tracks here and there. It is silent, well, a London silent, with the distant roar of traffic, car horns, dogs barking… I sigh thinking about how much I am missing the natural silence of Exton.

“Why are we outside?” I ask, shivering a little.

“Well, I don’t know about you, but I was hoping not to set fire to your house, which could well happen,” Will teases. I shrug my shoulders and let out a chuckle.

“Fire is the hardest of the four elements, and it is the most consuming,” he begins, “as I mentioned with snow, you are interfacing with molecules, but you are instead speeding them up. You are creating heat and chaos out of nothing, and the result is tremendously better when that heat and chaos is coming directly from you.”

“Luckily chaos is something I’m full of at the moment,” I joke, while I prepare my breathing the way he’d taught me how. He shoots me a serious look.

“The thing is, unlike the other elements, you need to be in a certain state of mind to do this,” Will explains tentatively.

“What do you mean?” I asked. He sighs a little and looking like he is trying to avoid saying something in particular. I feel the heat from his gaze from a moment, his eyes softening as he looks at me with such lon ging…

He holds his hand out, palm facing the sky. With one breath he ignites his entire palm, a ball of flames sitting proudly within. I feel a bubble of excitement inside me as I stared at the ball of fire.

“That’s just…so cool,” I coo, eager to do it myself.

“This was very easy for me to create. because of the strong way that I feel…when I am around you,” Will says, an edge to his voice. I meet his gaze once more, noting his eyes’ darkened appearance.

“You need to draw on a strong emotion. Something tangible that you can almost physically feel, and bring it to the surface. But you NEED to be careful with it, as it further amplifies that feeling if you aren’t in complete control. Like…if you did it out of anger, it would easily make you so much angrier, which is when things can quickly get out of control.”

I nod seriously and I level my breathing once again, unable to push Will’s words out of my mind. I knew how he felt about me, but having him say it in that way again along with physical flaming proof…it was hard to ignore.

I take in a deep breath, holding my palm out to face the sky as Will had, concentrating on a strong emotion. Because it was so fresh in my mind, I focused my thoughts on Will, how thankful I was for him, how close I had gotten to him. I begin to think about a bundle of molecules speeding up; but as I do so, an unexpected memory of a shirtless Will stepping out of the hedge the other night, pops into my mind.

My palm immediately ignites, and a pleasantly hot sensation spreads across it, leaving a tiny ball of fire nestled in the middle of my palm. I breathe hard in excitement, looking from the fire in my palm and then into Will’s eyes and back again with glee across my face.

“That…did not take you long,” Will says, looking impressed at first and then clearly looking at my aura yet again, “however…I warned you that thoughts based on lust were not the best to use when trying this as a beginner.”

I ignore him, too wrapped up the feeling of surging adrenaline and magic that is rushing all around me, white hot, warming me in multiple places and causing my heart to race.

The magic definitely feels stronger and sticks around when using fire. I can feel it affecting me in a particular way, the feeling I had at seeing Will shirtless returning…tenfold…

I use it, fueling me further as I concentrate on the ball of fire in my palm, willing it to be larger. It grows in size to the size of a small football, the undulating flames utterly captivating.

My magic feels hot and powerful all around my body and coupled with how I am now feeling, it is so invigorating.

I feel powerful and I crave so much more.

“Okay, Els, I would decrease it now and work on snuffing it out,” Will says, sounding a little alarmed at the writhing ball of fire in front of us, getting larger by the second.

I feel disappointed.

But with a quick flick of my gaze towards him, I breathe calmly, shrinking the ball in front of me, extinguishing it by bringing my fingers into my palm. The powerful feelings it had managed to ignite inside me remain, however.

“That felt so amazing,” I breathe, my eyes shining with delight.

“You are always such a natural with all this, it’s ridiculous,” Will mutters, regarding me a little with pride. I look back at him with my heart still racing, finding him more enticing than he ever had before.
