Matthew felt speechless. Why did it feel like Nicholas was implying that he wasn't kind or honest?

"I figured I'd find an apprentice inside and teach him everything I know. That's when I met you, and I knew right away you were the one.

"Later, I found that you went to prison for your wife, not for something you did. That was when I kind of regretted it. You should've sensed it when I didn't teach you a single thing during that period."

Matthew recalled how irritable Nicholas was during that time. Back then, he didn't think too much about it, assuming Nicholas was bothered by something outside prison. So, he was surprised to learn the truth.

"But why did you keep teaching me after that?"

"I felt like if I passed up on you, I'd never find such a great apprentice again. So, I decided to keep teaching you."
