When they parted ways the night before, Madison mentioned that she was returning to Durbaine the next day and wanted to have dinner alone with him that night.
Moreover, Finnegan agreed to it.
However, that morning, he had made another promise to Rhiannon.
One simply couldn't be in two places at once.
“Should I pretend to have forgotten to bring my phone along me with and apologize later?”
However, upon considering the idea, Finnegan felt that it wasn't appropriate.
Thus, he had no choice but to answer the phone.
“Finnegan, I've made a reservation at Ocean Restaurant. I'll meet you there at seven.”
Finnegan awkwardly pinched the bridge of his nose. “Something unexpected has come up. I'm afraid I won't be able to have dinner with you tonight.”
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before Madison's slightly disappointed voice came through. “It's alright, you go ahead with whatever you're doing. We can have a meal together when I return to Jadeborough in the future or when you come to Durbaine.”
“I'm sorry.”
“It's alright.”
After finishing her sentence, Madison hung up first.
Finnegan rubbed his temples. “Forget it. We might not even meet again in the future. I'll just have to treat it as something I'll regret.”
Meanwhile, Alisha drove up to him.
Finnegan opened the car door and settled inside. “We're going to Pentariver Group!”
Half an hour later, the car arrived at Pentariver Group. Rhiannon was still a little while away from finishing work.
After calling Rhiannon to inform her that he was downstairs, Finnegan asked Alisha, “Have you arranged everything I asked you to this afternoon?”
“Everything has been arranged.” Alisha gently stroked her thick, lustrous hair. “But what exactly are you trying to do? It's one thing to stop disciplining Leonardo and the others, but why are you even making a deal with them? You're acting as if you're trying to prove your own innocence.”
Finnegan unbuckled his seatbelt and got out of the car. “I have my reasons!”
After slamming the car door shut, he walked toward Pentariver Group Tower across the street.
Alisha rolled her eyes. “This guy loves to keep me in suspense. Just wait and see. The day I reel you in, I won't give in to you. I'll leave you yearning.”
A little past six, the Maserati that Mandy had given to Rhiannon came into view.
Finnegan wave at it.
When the car pulled up close, he opened the door and got in, then he and Rhiannon drove to Bennett Farmhouse together.
It had been quite some time since they last met. Upon seeing Nancy, Rhiannon rushed over and embraced her. “Have you missed me?”
Nancy pushed Rhiannon away with a smile. “You're not a man. Why should I miss you?”
“Well, look at you, showing signs of prioritizing your love life over your friends now.”
Rhiannon chuckled teasingly at Nancy, causing Nancy to laugh and beg for her to stop. “Alright, alright, I was just joking with you. I've missed you terribly.”
“That's more like it,” Rhiannon huffed before she stopped. “Has Ms. Lindsey and her brother arrived yet?”
“Not yet.”
Finnegan walked over, saying, “I'm going to watch Bennett cook. You girls carry on with your conversation.”
His brows slowly furrowed. “Nancy, she's the daughter of the young madam. So, it was she who entrusted Nancy to you. But because of your love for the young mistress, you started treating Nancy as your own daughter?”
Bennett abruptly looked up. “How did you know?”
Aside from him and the young madam, absolutely no one knew about the matter.
Finnegan released his three fingers, chuckling. “After hearing what you've said, it's not hard to analyze. But considering that Nancy is your little master and you're raising her as your daughter, it seems like you're indirectly taking advantage of the young madam, aren't you?”
A flicker of embarrassment passed through Bennett's eyes, but he did not doubt that Finnegan had guessed correctly. “It was the young mistress who asked me to raise Nancy as my daughter,” he said. “She told me that Nancy had no mother, and could not be deprived of a father's love as well. Otherwise, I would never have disrespected her like that!”
Upon hearing this, Finnegan gave a slight nod. “In that case, Nancy...”
As if Bennett knew what Finnegan wanted to ask, he interrupted the latter, “I'm sorry, but that's all I can tell you. Also, if you know anything more, please don't tell Nancy.”
Finnegan had wanted to probe further, but Bennett was still unwilling to say much.
However, from the conversation they just had, Finnegan had already surmised that Nancy must come from an extraordinary background.
Otherwise, Bennett, who was an Enigma Realm cultivator, wouldn't have risked his life protecting her.
“Ms. Lindsey, how come you're alone? Where's Stanley?”
At that moment, Rhiannon's voice could be heard outside.
Lindsey responded accordingly, “My brother went out in the afternoon and hasn't returned yet. He said he'll come by later, so we should start eating first.”
Finnegan stretched lazily, patting Bennett on the shoulder. “Bennett, I didn't take your life last time and even helped you keep a secret from Nancy. If I were to ask for your help now, you wouldn't refuse, would you?”
Bennett looked up. “The moment you spared my life, it has become yours. Now, tell me what's it about!”
“Don't make it sound so serious. You shouldn't take your own life for granted.”
