Upon observing the situation at the scene, Alexander roughly understood what had transpired.
With a serious expression, he said, “Old Mrs. Zimmerman, I believe it would be best if you let go of your prejudices and assumptions. Mr. Larkin is absolutely a trustworthy person. Please allow him to go in and have a look.”
However, Millicent was extremely resolute. “Impossible! Just tell me how Bruce is doing.”
Patrick and his family were steeped in bitter helplessness because if Millicent said no, their hands were tied.
Alexander's face turned somewhat unpleasant. “Old Mrs. Zimmerman, Mr. Larkin is well-known in General Hospital and even throughout Jadeborough—”
Millicent, impatient, cut him off and shouted, “Enough! Stop telling me how great he is. I don't trust him, anyway. I'm afraid he might kill my husband with his treatment. Just tell me how Bruce is doing now!”
Finnegan shrugged and turned around. “Dr. Cooper, handle this matter yourself.”
Bernice tensed up. “Finnegan!”
However, Finnegan did not pause for even a moment.
He had gone there out of consideration for Bernice. As long as she understood the situation, he wouldn't show any kindness toward her family. It's not that I refuse to treat the patient. Her family won't let me in!
Alexander sighed quietly and said, “Old Mr. Zimmerman was already in a deep coma when he was brought in. Upon further examination, we found that his brain had been deprived of oxygen for more than five minutes. Now, he has suffered irreversible brain damage. To put it bluntly, he hasn't yet passed the critical condition. Even if he does pull through later, he will likely be in a vegetative state for the rest of his life.”
Millicent's legs were trembling.
Grasping Alexander's hand tightly, she asked, “Is there really no solution?”
Patrick then said, “Dr. Cooper, you must think of a solution, no matter the cost.”
“This isn't a matter of money.” Alexander shook his head. “This issue isn't just about us. It would be the same in any hospital around the world. So, you should let Mr. Larkin take a look. Only he can create a miracle!”
Ever since her last plan failed, Millicent had been relentlessly ostracizing Finnegan.
Although Alexander still held Finnegan in such high regard, that only deepened her disdain. “Dr. Cooper, you're overestimating Finnegan,” she said. “If even an expert like you, with decades of experience, is at a loss, what can he possibly do?”
Alexander also had some understanding of the matters concerning Finnegan and the Zimmerman family.
Therefore, he couldn't be bothered to waste any more words with Millicent. “You can decide for yourself. After all, the best outcome for Old Mr. Zimmerman now is being in a vegetative state and the worst outcome is death!”
With that, Alexander left directly. He had done everything he could, and there was nothing left for him to do.
Bernice persuaded, “Grandma, please let Finnegan have a look.”
Millicent completely dismissed the idea. “Absolutely not. Finnegan, that wolf in sheep's clothing, is too devious. He surely wouldn't sincerely treat your grandpa.”
With that, she turned around, her words as shocking as ever, and said, “Bishop, get in touch with the lawyer. Even if your father wakes up, he'll be in a vegetative state. We can't afford any mistakes with the Zimmerman family and the company. I intend to inherit your father's shares.”
What? Upon hearing those words, Patrick and his family were taken aback.
Patrick refused to believe his ears. “Mom, what are you doing? Dad hasn't even passed the critical condition yet!”
Meanwhile, the Bishop family was overwhelmed with excitement, and Timothy even exclaimed, “I'm going to contact the lawyer right now!”
Millicent stated unequivocally, “The words of Dr. Cooper just now were very clear. Even if your father wakes up, he'll be in a vegetative state. Therefore, as his wife, it is both reasonable and lawful for me to inherit everything he has. You and your family should stay at the hospital to look after your father. Bishop and his family will accompany me to consult a lawyer and handle affairs.”
Nearby, Sapphire gently pulled on Millicent's sleeve. “Mom, this arrangement isn't appropriate.”
Millicent's face darkened. “Are you questioning my decisions, too? Now that your father has tumbled, I am the head of the family!”
Pausing for a moment, Finnegan's smile faded. “Moreover, perhaps they're hoping that Old Mr. Zimmerman would either die or remain unconscious. Otherwise, in a few days, both the Zimmerman family and Firebird Group would belong to my wife's family. They would have no choice but to be at their mercy in the future.”
Alexander slapped his own thigh. “What you're saying really does make sense.”
Alexander then relayed everything he had just heard, as well as Millicent's decision, to Finnegan.
Upon hearing that, Finnegan wasn't surprised in the slightest. “It would be strange if they didn't react this way when Old Mr. Zimmerman fell.”
“Mr. Larkin, why do you seem completely unfazed?”
Finnegan picked up the cup and took a sip. “Would you believe me if I told you that Millicent is not my father-in-law's biological mother?”
Knowing that Finnegan wouldn't say such a thing without reason, Alexander was shocked and asked, “Mr. Larkin, is this really true?”
Finnegan nodded.
“No wonder!” At this moment, Alexander understood all that had previously been incomprehensible.
At the same time, Alexander realized something and asked, “Mr. Larkin, I think I know why you're telling me all this. Is there something you need my help with?”
Finnegan glanced at his phone. A message from Bernice had already arrived, asking him to meet her at the parking lot.
Setting down the cup, he picked up his phone. “There's a prescription I just wrote on your desk. Prepare the medication according to it and have Old Mr. Zimmerman drink it. This should stabilize his vitality for now. As for what to do next, that depends on how far certain people are willing to go.”
With that, Finnegan departed straightaway.
Alexander picked up the prescription and sighed. It's a pity I don't have a granddaughter, and Mr. Larkin isn't my grandson-in-law either! Otherwise, it seemed like he would definitely banish people like Millicent from his family!
