“Where are your parents?”
Finnegan saw Bernice in the underground parking lot. She looked weary and her eyes were red. Feeling heartbroken, he pulled her into his embrace.
Bernice leaned against Finnegan and said, “My mother has already gone home. My father was told to stay behind by my grandmother to sign away his inheritance rights to my grandfather's property!”
Finnegan sneered, “Your grandmother is really anxious, isn't she?”
As soon as Bruce fell, she couldn't wait to inherit all of his assets. She even demanded that Patrick renounce his inheritance rights.
It was clear that her intention was to pass everything on to Bishop after inheriting it.
Bernice said bitterly, “She even demanded that my father take over Firebird Winery while giving up his inheritance rights!”
Furrowing his brows, Finnegan asked, “Is there a problem with Firebird Winery?”
Otherwise, Millicent would not have left it for Patrick.
Bernice nodded. “A very big problem!”
Firebird Group rose to prominence from a humble brewery.
It was what was now known as Firebird Winery.
As the years went by, with the rise of leading liquor companies, Firebird Winery, having no new products to offer, had lost its competitive edge.
Not only did they suffer losses year after year, but they also had debts amounting to several billion.
Upon hearing this, Finnegan commented, “Your grandmother really is quite the strategist!”
The debt was transferred to Patrick, while she herself inherited Bruce's net assets.
As expected of a stepmother!
“But your father probably wouldn't agree, would he?”
A hint of helplessness and embarrassment flashed on Bernice's face. “At first, my father was against it. But my grandmother said that if he didn't agree today, she would throw herself against the wall and end up in the emergency room, just like my grandfather. And since my father is dutiful, he agreed!”
The corners of Finnegan's mouth twitched slightly.
He knew full well that agreeing would result in the loss of his inheritance rights, and he would be in debt by several billion.
Why did he agree?
With a silent remark about Patrick's foolish action, Finnegan asked, “How was it arranged when your grandfather first decided to entrust the Zimmerman family and the corporation to your family?”
Bernice replied, “Our family leads the Zimmerman household and the corporation. Uncle Bishop's family does not participate in any decision-making. They simply receive thirty percent of the annual net profit dividends! But now that Grandpa has fallen, the promise initially made will surely not be acknowledged by them. Grandma would never agree either!”
Finnegan heaved a sigh. “Your grandfather was truly benevolent and just toward them. It's just a pity that their greed has no limits. So, what do you plan to do? Your grandfather must have told you about Timothy, right?”
Bernice nodded. “When you visited the Zimmerman residence last time, Grandpa mentioned that Timothy is not Uncle Bishop's biological son. However, due to the shame of airing our dirty laundry in public and the affection that has grown over the years, Grandpa forbade me from speaking about it. But I don't know what to do. Grandpa can't wake up, and we surely can't go head-on with Grandma, can we? So, if you can treat Grandpa, what are the chances of him waking up?”
As long as Bruce woke up, all the problems could naturally be resolved with ease.
Patrick and Bernice had only given in to Millicent by holding onto such hope.
Finnegan could tell what Bernice was thinking. “Darling, your grandmother and your uncle's family have no regard for kinship, so why bother?”
“It's precisely because they behave like this that we cannot do the same. Otherwise, how would others perceive the Zimmerman family?”
“But what if your grandmother isn't your biological grandmother?”
What?
Bernice shuddered, her eyes filled with confusion. “Finnegan, what are you talking about?”
Finnegan had promised Bruce not to mention it, but now that it had come to this, he could no longer conceal it. “Do you remember the last time I had a private conversation with your grandfather at Jerome Medical Clinic?”
This time, Bernice displayed a firm stance. “If you don't allow me to have a private conversation with my father, regardless of signing or taking over Firebird Winery, we won't agree!”
“How insolent!”
This attitude infuriated Millicent on the spot.
Bernice took Patrick's hand and started walking away. “Dad, we need to talk.”
The father and daughter arrived at the stairwell.
Patrick looked somewhat dejected. “What's wrong?”
Listening to the curses of Millicent from a distance, Bernice sighed and said, “Dad, if Grandma isn't your biological mother, will you still agree to her demands today?”
Patrick furrowed his brows. “Bernie, what are you talking about? Your grandmother is definitely my biological mother!”
Biting her lower lip, Bernice relayed everything Finnegan had just said to Patrick.
However, she did not mention that Timothy was not the biological son of Bishop.
Patrick furrowed his brows before smoothing them out. “Bernie, if what Finnegan said is true, then I must agree to your grandmother's request even more so.”
Bernice was taken aback. “Dad?”
Patrick gave a smile filled with mixed emotions. “Even if it's true, what can it possibly change?”
In the legal sense, Millicent had the right to make such a decision.
If they were to engage in a lawsuit with Millicent, not only would it take an indefinite amount of time, but it would also impact the Zimmerman family and the corporation.
Bernice's body shuddered. “Dad, what do you mean?”
“Let's talk about it later and have a chat with your grandmother first.”
