Alaina didn’t give an inch. “Since you’re the one doing these shameful things, why shouldn’t I talk about them? How are you going to explain this to Trista? What kind of example are you setting for this child?”

Cassian sat with his jaw clamped shut, not saying a word.

Samantha lowered her head, hiding the flash of pure ecstasy in her eyes.

From the sound of it, Alaina was finally cracking. She was actually going to recognize Algernon.

To the Ironthorn elders, a male heir was worth its weight in gold.

Even if he came from Samantha, as long as he carried Cassian’s blood, the pack would never let him be labeled a “rogue” forever.

Samantha was vibrating with excitement. In an attempt to look like the perfect, dutiful she- wolf, she stood up to help the server set the table.

But as she reached for a bone–china plate, her hand slipped. A few pieces of steak tumbled onto the tablecloth.

Before she could react, Algernon reached out with his bare hands, grabbed the gravy–soaked meat, and shoved it into his mouth.

Samantha didn’t even try to stop him. She just pulled out a napkin and gave his greasy hands a distracted wipe.

Cassian watched the scene, his brow furrowing in disgust. For an Alpha, etiquette and discipline were hardcoded into his DNA, and this was hard to stomach.

Sitting at the head of the table, Alaina didn’t hide her revulsion; the boy’s crude behavior was a loud reminder of Samantha’s messy, rogue background.

Once the server left, Alaina fixed her cold gaze on Cassian. “If you couldn’t let go of this she- wolf back then, you never should have defied the whole pack to mate with Trista. Once you took that oath, you shouldn’t have done anything to trash the reputation of this pack.”

“Look at the mess you’ve made,” she continued. “The territory is drowning in gossip. Trista is heartbroken by your betrayal, and Samantha and the kid are still just nameless rogues.”

Cassian gripped his water glass until his knuckles turned white. “Mom, you called us here for a reason. What’s your point?”

Alaina patted the back of her hand, her tone final. “Since you’ve already failed Trista, don’t leave the other side hanging. You and Samantha have a child together. Under pack law, you’re the one at fault, but you’ve created a family in practice. You have an obligation to step up.”

Cassian’s face went pale. He opened his mouth to argue, but the words wouldn’t come.

He’d been backed into a corner the moment he decided to claim that kid.

But he never expected his mother–a she–wolf obsessed with bloodlines and status–to be the one pushing him to end his mating.

Alaina kept the pressure on. “Samantha’s mother is bedridden and struggling. It’s only right that you go visit.”

As she stood up to leave, Alaina delivered the final, lethal blow, “Since you can’t give Trista the stability she deserves, go stay with these two. You’re so indecisive lately, I’m starting to wonder if this boy even carries Ironthorn blood at all.”

The words hit like a lightning strike.

Samantha went ghost–white, her fingers trembling. Even Cassian’s dark eyes went dead, reflecting a hollow silence.

Alaina picked up her designer bag, not sparing them another glance. “I’ll leave you ‘three‘ to your family time. After dinner, drive them back to their apartment and do your duty. As for Trista–you have no kids together and no complicated territory ties. Just let her go.”

Before Cassian could even stand up to stop her, Alaina walked out, leaving the room vibrating with the heavy, oppressive aura of an Alpha.

The silence in the booth was deafening.

After a long while, Samantha carefully peeked at Cassian’s thunderous expression. She tried to play the “sweet” card. “Cassian, maybe you should go back to Blue Bay and be with Trista. She’s probably waiting for you. Algernon and I can just take an Uber. It’s fine.”

Cassian crushed the paper cup in his hand, his eyes tracking Samantha with a predatory intensity. “Did you send Madison to find me?”

Samantha’s heart skipped a beat. She immediately put on an act of tearful outrage. “What? Cassian, what are you saying? Did Madison harass you?”

She started rambling, her voice rising. “Things have been so chaotic at my place lately. Madison saw how stressed I was–I can barely even hold my wolf–and she mentioned asking you for help. But I told her no! She must have gone behind my back. That girl… I’m going to have a serious talk with her!”

Cassian felt a wave of pure irritation. His wolf was growling with disgust at Samantha’s cluttered, rogue scent.

He stood up abruptly, his cold aura making the air feel heavy. “I have things to do. Call a cab.”

Seeing him pull away, Samantha’s fear finally overrode her common sense.

She lunged forward, grabbing his sleeve, her voice shaking violently. “Cassian, you saw it… you heard your mother. She’s questioning Algernon’s bloodline. Just help me out here, please?”

She took a deep breath, playing her dirtiest card. “Do you really want to see Howard go on another ‘territory purge‘ like he did six years ago? Do you want him to crush me like an ant again?”
