He shook Samantha off with a look of pure disgust. Feed the kid. I’ll be in the car. And don’t you dare bring that roguemutt stench into my upholstery.”

Samantha didn’t dare hesitate. That level of Alphagrade loathing made her skin crawl.

She frantically shoved a few bites of steak into Algernon’s mouth and hurried him out the door, scurrying after Cassian to the car.

Inside the cramped space, Cassian’s aura was suffocatinga mix of total dominance and visceral rejection that made it hard for them to even breathe.

He drove in a deathly silence until they pulled up to their apartment building.

As they got out, Samantha moved too fast and accidentallytwisted her ankle.

She let out a sharp cry of pain, watching Cassian out of the corner of her eye. He sat behind the wheel like a stone statue.

She gave her son’s sleeve a sharp tug. The kid was a rogue by bloodhe knew the game.

He immediately started pumping out helpless puppheromones and threw a tantrum. I can’t walk! I want Mommy to carry me!

Samantha sank to the pavement, clutching her ankle. She tilted her head back, exposing her throat in a submissive, damselpose. Cassian… I don’t think I can do that. Can you help me get Algernon upstairs? His wolf is still so spooked.”

Cassian fought it for a second, but the pup’s hormones were a biological override. He killed the engine and stepped out.

He hauled Samantha up with one hand and tossed the heavy kid over his shoulder with the other.

Can you walk?he growled.

Samantha immediately latched onto his arm, leaning her full weight against him to make sure their scents tangled together in the night air.

Across the street, Trista had just finished dropping off a coworker.

Right there in her line of sight was Cassian. He was carrying the kid, with Samantha clinging to him like a devoted mate.

Under the glow of the streetlights, their shadows stretched out across the pavement, looking for all the world like a perfect little family.

Algernon was the first to see her. He pointed across the street, his voice full of excitement. Daddy! Mommy! Look! It’s Trista!

The second Algernon spoke, the freshly healed bond on the back of Cassian’s neck flared with a searing heat.

He snapped his head around and locked eyes with Trista. Her gaze was as cold as a dead sea.

Cassian felt his heart drop into a black hole. His wolf went feral, slamming against his consciousness as it sensed Trista’s absolute despair.

He didn’t even thinkhe practically dropped the kid and started sprinting across the street toward her.

Trista didn’t give him a chance to say a word.

Ignoring the ache in her soul, she slid into the driver’s seat and slammed the locks.

Cassian reached the car just as she was pulling away, his hands gripping the edge of her window. Trista! Stop! Let me explain!

Trista looked at him through the glass.

Her eyes were vacant, as if she were looking at a rotting corpse. She had completely shut down the bond.

She floored the gas, and the engine let out a guttural roar as the car tore away into the night.

The wake of the exhaust and her absolute pheromones nearly knocked Cassian flat on the asphalt,

Lately, Cassian had been playing the part of the model husband, coming home early and sending overthetop caringtexts.

Trista had actually started to let her guard down, thinking he was finally reflecting on his

Now, she felt like a total idiot.

His good husbandroutine was just a smoke screen to keep her quiet.

Late that night, in the Blue Bay parking garage, Cassian sat in his car, the engine off, staring into nothing.

He rolled down the window and lit a cigarette, letting the nicotine numb his restless instincts.

The haze of smoke only made his dark expression look more ominous.

A white Ferrari slid into the spot next to him, and Fred hopped out, looking way too relaxed.

He leaned against Cassian’s window and helped himself to a cigarette from the pack on the dash. Hey. If you’re too scared to go upstairs, you must’ve really screwed the pooch this time. What’d you do?

Cassian blew out a cloud of smoke, his voice sounding like sandpaper. As long as you keep your mouth shut and stop enjoying the show, my mating will be fine.

Fred let out a sharp laugh. Give it up, Cassian. Everyone in the territory knows you and Trista are a ticking time bomb. We’re all just waiting for the explosion.

Cassian shot him a lethal look. If you’d stop pouring gas on the fire, that day would never

come.

Fred shrugged and started walking toward the elevator.

Keep telling yourself that, man. Everyone else thinks you’re a joke.”
