Cassian felt like his chest was tightening, the air in the car becoming unbearable. He pushed the door open and stepped out.
Right at the elevator bank, he ran straight into Isaiali, who was lugging a massive suitcase around like a rogue looking for a place to crash.
Cassian immediately blocked the elevator door, his face mask of cold rejection.
“Go back to the eleventh floor. You aren’t stepping foot in my place tonight.”
Isaiah squared his shoulders, looking annoyed. “I don’t think so. I’m here to see Trista.”
Cassian clamped a hand onto Isaiah’s shoulder, his voice dropping to sub–zero temperatures. “Trista is your doctor, not your live–in nanny. Keep your distance.”
Isaiah wasn’t intimidated. He started raising his voice. “Keep threatening me and I’ll head up there right now and tell her you’re down here bullying a patient again!”
Cassian’s face darkened, but he gritted his teeth and pulled his hand back.
Watching Isaiah’s smug expression, Cassian’s wolf growled with restlessness.
“Keep pushing it,” Cassian threatened, “and I’ll call your grandfather and invite him to Blue Bay myself.”
Isaiah lost it instantly, his wolf tail practically bristling. “You Ironthorn prick! If you bring that old man here, I’ll take Trista and run to Europe. I’ll make sure you end up a dateless bachelor for the rest of your life!”
With that, Isaiah stomped into the elevator.
The two men stood in opposite corners of the small space–Isaiah glaring daggers, while Cassian looked at him with the cold disdain he reserved for “inferior” wolves.
When they hit the ninth floor, Cassian stepped out. Isaiah tried to follow, but Cassian pulled out his phone as if to start dialing. Isaiah cursed under his breath and stepped back.
Cassian stood by the doors, watching the numbers jump until they hit 11. Once he was sure the “annoying wolf” was back in his own nest, he turned toward his front door.
When Cassian walked in, Trista was sitting on the sofa.
He instinctively let out a wave of placating pheromones, his eyes locked on her face.
He knew she had to be livid after seeing him across the street with Samantha’s kid.
“Trista,” he began, hesitating. “About tonight… I—”

She held up a hand to silence him and walked out onto the balcony to take the call, clearly not wanting him.

numb the frustration boiling in his blood.
By the time he came out, Trista was already in bed.
He walked over to speak, but her phone vibrated again.

Trista threw back the covers to get up. “Go to sleep. I’ll take this in the guest room.”
Cassian caught her wrist, his voice turning harsh. “What secrets are you keeping that I can’t hear?”
Trista pulled her hand away, her expression perfectly calm. “It’s a work emergency. You’re not a healer; you wouldn’t be able to help anyway.”
“If it’s work, you shouldn’t have to hide,” he persisted.
Trista let out a dry, mirthless laugh.
She looked him straight in those high–tier Alpha eyes. “Don’t worry. If I ever fall for someone else, I’ll be man enough to tell you to your face.”
The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bone.
Trista pushed past him and walked out. Cassian stood frozen, his chest feeling like it had been filled with lead.
“Trista!” he shouted at her retreating back. “You better just be talking out of spite!”
Trista didn’t stop.
If that day ever came, she wouldn’t hide behind a dead mating. She’d just walk.
Ten minutes later, Trista came back and found Cassian pacing the rug like a caged animal.
After a brief, cold exchange of looks, she climbed into bed and plugged in her phone.
Cassian followed, handing her a glass of water in a desperate attempt to break the tension.
Trista took it but just set it on the nightstand.
“Go to sleep,” she said. “I have work in the morning, and I have to go back to Shadowfang in the afternoon. I need to be sharp.”
She rolled onto her side and closed her eyes.
She didn’t even have the energy to pick a fight about the scene on the sidewalk.
Cassian stood by the bed, his dark wolf–eyes fixed on her.
Finally, he spoke, his voice low and raspy. “Tonight was a setup. My mother forced me to go. Samantha twisted her ankle; I was just helping her with Algernon and giving her a hand up.”
Trista didn’t even open het eyes. Her tone was dismissive. “She’s your woman and he’s your kid. Whether you’re carrying her or spending the night at her place, you don’t owe your ‘contract mate‘ an explanation.”
Cassian’s brow snapped down, a flare of anger hitting him.

He sat roughly on the edge of the bed and forced her to turn and face him. “Trista, how many times do I have to say it? Samantha is not my woman.”
Trista opened her eyes and met his gaze with a cold, mocking smirk. “But you won’t deny that she’s the mother of that little wolf–pup, will you?”
The predatory Alpha aura around Cassian collapsed instantly. His eyes flickered with hesitation, and he fell into a deathly, hollow silence,
