Avery’s POV
Gideon stared at me like he had just seen a ghost, and Sebastian wasn’t much better. His mouth was hanging open slightly, his eyes wide.
“What?” I asked, treading water. “You look like you’ve never seen someone take a swim before.”
“We thought you were dead,” Gideon said.
“I almost was. But I escaped. And I guess I found paradise while I was at it.” I lifted my hand, water droplets flying, and gestured around us.
Gideon let out a breath that sounded almost like a laugh. He ran his hand through his hair, then looked down at himself. He was covered in mud and blood, his chest heaving.
“You should try it,” I said. “We might not be able to find this place again.”
The two men looked at each other. Then, with a shrug, Gideon leaned down and began to untie his shoes. Sebastian hesitated, but when Gideon stripped down to his underwear and waded into the pool, Sebastian, not to be outdone, quickly followed suit.
I tried not to stare. Really, I did. But Gideon’s body was hard to ignore. All lean muscle and scars, his skin marked with cuts and bruises from years of fighting. No matter how many times I saw him like this, I found myself gawking every time like a lovesick teenager who had just seen a naked man for the first time, and now was no different. My eyes traced the line of his shoulders, the ridges of his abdomen, the way the water lapped at his hips as he moved deeper.
I felt my face heat and looked away, only to see Sebastian undressing behind him.
My cheeks burned hotter. Sebastian’s frame was slimmer than Gideon’s, his shoulders less broad. But he was lean and graceful, and when he slipped into the water, he barely made a ripple.
I ducked lower in the pool and let the water rise to my chin.
“This place is incredible,” Sebastian said quietly.
Gideon hummed in agreement and looked around. “In all my years of living in Nightwolf, I’ve never seen it before.”
“Me neither,” I admitted. “Or anything like it, for that matter.”
