“It was my grandmother’s,” Gideon said. “She used to wear it during ceremonies. I thought you might like it.”
I stared at the comb, brushing my fingers over the beads. The silver was cool and smooth. “Gideon, I…”
“You don’t have to wear it if you don’t want to,” Gideon added quickly. “I just thought—”
“I love it,” I said. My eyes had grown misty again. “Thank you.”
I turned around, pulling the comb out of the box and sliding it into my hair. I could see the beads glinting in the mirror on the wall.
When I turned back to face him, Gideon was watching me, leaning against the wall with his hands tucked into his pockets. He studied me for a moment, then nodded.
“It suits you,” he said.
I stepped forward and kissed him on the cheek. “Thank you. Really.”
Before I could pull away, he reached up and touched my face, his thumb brushing against my jaw. I stiffened under his touch.
“I’ve been thinking.” He licked his lips. “I want tonight to be a fresh start. For all of us. I hope that’s a possibility for you, too.”
My throat bobbed. A fresh start.
I’d spent so many years thinking that I’d already made my fresh start in the human lands, and that there wouldn’t be another. And yet, now, as the days passed in the place I used to call home, as I watched my son grow healthier and as I grew closer to Gideon, I couldn’t help but wonder if the human lands were only a step in my journey—and this was the real fresh start. The final chapter before the vision I’d had all those years ago of a quiet, peaceful life with my child.
Gideon’s hand dropped, and he stepped back. “We should get going. The guests are starting to arrive.”
“Right. Yeah.” I looked down at my robe. “I should get dressed.”
Gideon nodded, and we parted ways. I went back to my room, where I’d laid out my dress for the ceremony the night before—a simple midnight blue number that fell to my ankles, with long, off-the-shoulder sleeves. It went perfectly with the comb, which I tucked back into my hair after I had rearranged it into a half-up style.
A little while later, I made my way downstairs. The house was buzzing with activity. Servants hurried past carrying trays of food and drink. Guests were already filling the main hall.
