Avery’s POV
The three businessmen didn’t move from where they stood just inside the doorway. Their suits were perfectly pressed, their expensive watches gleaming in the light, and yet they looked so small and out of place, nothing at all like the way I remembered them from our last meeting.
“Gentlemen,” I said, smiling as I approached. “You actually came.”
The tallest of the three turned to look at me. His eyes swept over my dress, then over my shoulder at the crowd behind me. His face twisted.
“We said we would,” he said. “We are men of our word.”
“Of course.” I gestured toward the room. “Please, come in. There are hors d’oeuvres and drinks, and dinner will be served after the ceremony. Help yourselves. Mingle. I think you’ll find everyone here is quite welcoming.”
The second man looked warily at a group of pack warriors who were laughing loudly near the fireplace with drinks in their hands. They were wearing their formal uniforms, but they still had a rugged look about them. One had his hair pulled back into a bun at the back of his skull to reveal the undercut beneath, and another had a dark, winding neck tattoo that swirled all the way up to the underside of his chin.
“I assure you,” I said pleasantly, “Nightwolf warriors are the best of the best. Those men haven’t lost a battle in their entire careers.”
The three businessmen exchanged looks like that was exactly what they feared.
I kept my smile in place. “Well, enjoy the party, and I’ll come find you after the ceremony. I have some things I’d like to show you.” I paused, then added, “You’re perfectly safe, by the way. No one here is going to bite you.”
One of the men let out a short laugh with a smile that was all teeth. “Right. Yes. Of course.”
With that, I watched as the three men migrated to the drinks table. They remained together as a unit, eyes darting around the room. A werewolf woman approached them, asking something as she pointed at the bowl of punch one of the men was standing in front of. He quickly stepped out of the way, clutching his drink glass so tight it was like he was considering throwing it at the poor woman just out of fear. She shot him a confused look before she sidled over and poured herself a cup.
Across the room, I caught Gideon’s gaze. His lips curved, and he nodded his head toward the three human men as the mate bond suddenly flared to life.
