I reached for it again now for practical reasons so I could tell her about my plans with Bjorn, but strangely, this time, the other end was silent.
It wasn’t closed off, either. I had felt that familiar titanium wall long enough to know when it was up and when it wasn’t, and this morning, there was nothing blocking us. It was just… dull. Muted. Like her end of the bond was sitting somewhere in the fog, and I couldn’t reach her.
I frowned and tried again, but the bond remained the same. Dull and quiet.
“Weird,” I muttered, turning away from the window and heading out.
The greenhouse door was propped open when I got there a few minutes later. I pushed it open the rest of the way and stepped inside.
The smell hit me first, the scent of soil and water and fragrant plants—some of them more foul-smelling than others, I had to admit. And then came the bond, warm and intimate. The scent of Avery wafted out from behind the plastic sheets toward the back of the greenhouse. The bond, which had been so muffled, suddenly felt normal. Alive.
Smiling now, I walked to the back of the greenhouse and pushed one of the sheets aside.
Avery was sitting at the worktable, bent over her notebook, pen moving quickly across the page. She hadn’t heard me come in. Her hair was pulled up in a loose knot with a few pieces framing the face, and she was wearing her usual jeans and a light blouse.
“Ahem.” I cleared my throat.
Avery jolted, dropping her pen, and pressed her hand to her chest. “Goddess, Gideon, you startled me.”
“Sorry.” I figured the bond felt muted because she was clearly focusing so intently. “What are you working on?”
She shrugged and shut her notebook, rubbing her eyes. “At the moment, not much. The shareholders gave me three months to come up with a product for humans and werewolves. I was just brainstorming.”

Why is Avery constantly projected as a weak, Gideon-centered female? It’s draining please I hope you can do better on your next lead female....
