The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 511

Avery’s POV

The path into the village wound down through the trees and opened up gradually, the forest thinning around us until the first rooftops appeared through the branches. It was familiar and peaceful, the air warm and smelling of pine and flowers.

Bjorn walked between us for a few minutes before he got bored of matching our pace and started running ahead.

“Don’t go too far,” I called after him.

He waved a hand over his shoulder to indicate he had heard me and probably wasn’t going to listen, and, in typical Bjorn fashion, he immediately sped up just to spite me.

Gideon shot me a quizzical, amused look. I shrugged, biting my lower lip to keep from smiling.

The village was busier than I remembered it being on a weekday morning. Storefronts lined both sides of the main street, some of them the same ones I had known ten years ago and some of them new, and pack members were moving from shop to shop with bags and baskets in their arms. A few of them nodded to Gideon as we passed. A couple of them looked at me, recognized me, and either whispered to each other behind their hands or just stared.

I pretended not to notice the looks, instead focusing on what had changed over the years.

The bakery on the corner was the same, just with a new sign and window boxes full of flowers that hadn’t been there before. The old hardware store was exactly the same. There was a new building on the far end of the street that Gideon explained was a new medical clinic, the last one having gotten too damaged to repair in a bad storm one year.

The town looked well cared for. Better than I expected, if I was being honest, given what those pack women had told me about the years after I left.

Gideon stopped in front of a building near the center of the street and turned to Bjorn, who had materialized at his elbow at some point.

“Business first,” Gideon said. “Then… food?”

Bjorn’s stomach answered for him with an audible rumble, which was impressive given that he had apparently eaten most of the kitchen at breakfast. Gideon raised his eyebrows.

“I didn’t have a snack,” Bjorn muttered.
