“I trusted you,” I said, turning away. “I gave you the benefit of the doubt after everything that happened because I thought you were still the man I cared for, who cared for me and my son when we needed you the most. But as it turns out, you’re just as conniving and manipulative as I thought. All that time fearing that Gideon was the one to be afraid of, and it was only you all along.”

With that, I walked over to the door, flinging it open again. A small crowd had gathered in the hallway: Colt and a couple of staff members, all having heard my raised voice through the walls. I didn’t care.

“Avery,” Sebastian called, stumbling after me as I walked down the hall. “Avery!”

“Go fuck yourself, Sebastian.”

Somehow, I managed to make it all the way back to Nightwolf before the tears came. By then, the adrenaline had worn off, leaving behind a dull, aching pain in my chest that had nothing to do with my fever.

The thing was, I couldn’t even be completely angry with Sebastian. He hadn’t done anything that was unlike him; I was more angry with myself for falling for the act, for thinking for a moment that the power-hungry Alpha could truly care about another person in the way he had claimed.

My mother and Gideon, as I suspected, were in the entryway when I went inside. They both opened their mouths to scold me for running off against the doctor’s orders, but I wasn’t in the mood to talk.

I pushed past them both, ignoring them, and took the stairs two at a time to my room. Down the hall, I could hear Bjorn’s voice drifting through the house, but I didn’t want to let him see me like this, so I went into my room without checking on him.

I wasn’t there for long before a soft knock came at the door. When I didn’t answer, Gideon poked his head in, finding me laying on the bed, staring at the ceiling with tears tracking down my cheeks and a blank, hollow expression on my face.

“Hey.” He quietly shut the door behind himself and walked over to the foot of the bed. “What happened? Your mom said you stormed off to talk to Sebastian about the necklace.”
