Gideon’s POV

By the time the lights came back on and the host had finished his toast, the whole party was laughing and buzzing, and I didn’t have a chance to figure out where Avery had run off to in the darkness before I was pulled into a conversation with an elderly Alpha from one of the neighboring packs who apparently chose me to be his sounding board for the evening.

As the Alpha talked about disputes over fishing rights on his border shared by another pack, I quietly nodded along, interjecting where appropriate, all the while scanning the crowd for Avery. I’d last seen her right before the lights went out, standing by the terrace doors, but now she was gone.

From a logical perspective, I knew I shouldn’t think much of it. The party was busier than I expected, and she might have gotten caught up chatting with someone out of sight, or perhaps she’d slipped out for some air after the lights went out.

Goddess knew she needed it, after everything she’d been through lately.

But the thing was, I couldn’t seem to look at it logically. Something about her disappearance was striking me as odd, making the hairs raise at the back of my neck. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but I knew I needed to find her. Just in case.

“Excuse me,” I said, cutting off the Alpha mid-sentence about trout. “I need to find my girlfriend.”

“Girlfriend?” he guffawed. “Aren’t you a little old for a girlfriend, Alpha Gideon?”

I forced a tight smile, pretending that was funny, and walked away, reaching out through the bond for Avery.

I stopped halfway across the room.

I couldn’t sense her. Just that strange, muted feeling, like she was somewhere far away, somewhere I couldn’t reach.

It was too familiar at this point to brush it off. And it was stronger than it was this morning.
