“Hey,” I called out, waving at the car with both hands as I bolted down the steps. “Colt! Stop!”
The engine revved, and the car peeled out of the driveway. I jogged down the driveway, my shoes crunching on the gravel, but by then, he was already gone.
For a long moment, I stood there and stared at the lights fading down the road, scratching my head.
What the hell was Sebastian’s Beta doing here? The guest list had been neighboring Alpha families and no one else, and Evergreen was too far from here to be considered “neighboring”.
Unless… Unless Sebastian had sent him.
My hands curled into fists at my sides as I thought about that damn necklace. If he had sent his Beta here to give it back to her, to continue whatever he had started, then I was going to—
“Gideon?”
I turned at the sound of Avery’s voice and instantly relaxed. She was walking through the garden path toward me, barefoot, her hair a little loose around her shoulders and her shoes dangling from her fingertips. I didn’t smell blood. Just her usual scent, sweet and delicate and familiar. I looked her up and down and didn’t see any injuries. Maybe it was someone else’s blood I’d smelled, or perhaps I had simply imagined it.
“There you are,” I said, closing the distance between us. I took her shoulders in both hands, checking her for injury again, and found nothing. “Where have you been? I’ve been looking all over.”
“I went for a walk.” She reached up and slid her free hand up my chest, smoothing down the lapels of my jacket. “It got stuffy in there. I needed some air.”
I glanced back toward the gate, toward the road where the taillights had vanished. “Avery, I think I just saw Colt.”
“Did you?” She made a small hmph sound in the back of her throat. “Strange.”
“Oh, Gideon. I’m fine,” I said, laughing. She tugged her fingers away, tilted her head back, and smiled up at me.
I studied her for a moment longer. Something seemed off with her tonight, but I chalked it up to everything that had happened recently. She’d been through a lot, and she was still a little sick even if she didn’t want to admit it. I’d be acting weird too, if I were in her position.
“You want to go home?” I asked.
She nodded and smiled. “Only if I get to go with you.”
I laughed, all of my tension fading away. “Alright.” I put my arm around her shoulders and began guiding her back to the car. “Let’s go home, then.”

Why is Avery constantly projected as a weak, Gideon-centered female? It’s draining please I hope you can do better on your next lead female....
