The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 547

Avery’s POV

By the time the sun came up, we’d tried everything I could think of.

We went through the boulders more times than I could count. We tried walking out a different way, off the trail entirely, pushing through the brush until the trees got too thick to pass, only to come out facing that same hollow every time.

I tried climbing one of the trees to see over the canopy, but my burned leg gave out under me halfway up, resulting in a not-so-graceful fall that landed, thankfully, on a bed of moss soft enough to not break anything.

By midmorning, we were both running on fumes, and Melissa was worse off than me by a long shot.

She’d been pushing through it for hours, leaning on me, dragging that bad foot behind her, but I could see it catching up to her. Her face had gone as white as a sheet and her foot was bleeding fully again.

Finally, I called it. She protested weakly as I hooked her arm around my neck and began hauling her back toward the hut, but we both knew there would be no getting out of here if we were both completely broken.

The hut still smelled like smoke from the night before, the scorched webbing hanging in black ribbons from the corners of the ceiling. I cleared the chair off and eased her down into it, then knelt down and took a look at her foot in the daylight for the first time.

It was worse than I’d thought. The skin around the wound had gone red and angry and hot to the touch, indicating an impending infection.

Melissa, sitting in her chair by the woodstove, started a small fire with some kindling and paper while I went out back and drew fresh water up from the well. After heating the water over the wood stove, I used it to clean her wound as best I could. I found a medicinal salve on one of the shelves, which I carefully smeared over the stump, then wrapped it all in some strips of cloth that I found in a cupboard.

“You need a doctor when we get out of here,” I said when I was finished. “It’s infected, and you’ll need antibiotics.”
