The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 548

It was old, the frame tarnished silver worked into a pattern of vines, the glass itself dark, like looking into a pool of standing water rather than a mirror. My reflection didn’t show up in it the way it should have. I turned it over in my hands, then carried it over to where Melissa was sleeping.

“Melissa.” I touched her shoulder. “Wake up. I think I found something.”

Her eyes opened, blinking blearily, and then sharpened the second they landed on the mirror in my hands. She sat up straighter.

“Where did you find that?” she asked.

“In the cupboard. What is it?”

She took it from me carefully, holding it up by the handle. “It’s a scrying glass,” she said. “My grandmother had one, smaller than this. They’re used for seeing things that are far away. People, places.” She looked up at me. “If this is the witch’s, it’s a strong one. Stronger than anything I’ve ever touched.”

My pulse spiked. “Can you use it?”

“I don’t know. Maybe.” She bit her lip, turning it over in her hands. “My grandmother taught me a little, but just the basics.” She glanced at me. “But if I can make it work, we might be able to find something useful.”

I watched as she set the glass on her knees, wiped her palms on her skirt, and bent over it. She pressed her fingertips onto the edge of the glass, shut her eyes, and murmured some words under her breath.

After a few moments, the dark surface began to swirl. It looked like ink dropped into water, curling and spreading, and then an image came up out of the black.

I leaned over Melissa’s shoulder and saw Sebastian in his bedroom at Evergreen, except it was in even worse condition now than the last time I’d seen it. The curtains were drawn. He was pacing back and forth across the floor in front of the bed, shirtless, his hair a mess, gnawing on his fingernails and muttering to himself.

Every few steps he’d stop and look at the door, then start pacing again. He looked like he hadn’t slept in a week, like he was waiting for something terrible to walk through the door.

“He doesn’t know where we are,” I said quietly. “Look at him. He’s scared out of his mind.”
