Gideon’s POV
Sebastian turned and left, glancing at us over his shoulder one last time before he climbed into his car. I watched as he started the engine and pulled out of the driveway.
When he was gone, I looked down at Avery, standing beside me with her head against my chest. “You okay?” I asked. “I know it’s hard seeing him after everything.”
Surprisingly, she nodded and smiled up at me. “Yeah. I’m not worried about him anymore.” She took my hand and gave it a tug back toward the house. “I was actually looking for you just now. Can we talk? Privately?”
Nodding, I let her guide me back into the house. It was quiet at this hour, Bjorn seemingly off somewhere, likely playing with the pack kids or building model airplanes in his room. Avery led me into the small sitting room toward the back of the house and shut the door behind us.
She turned to me, wringing her hands for a moment, her brow furrowed as if not quite sure where to begin.
Then, she said, “I wanted to talk to you about your marriage proposal.”
My brows lifted, but I waited for her to say something first.
“I’ve decided to accept,” she said. “I want to get married. Sooner rather than later.”
I blinked. The last time we’d talked about this, Avery had made it clear that she wanted to take her time. I respected that, and I understood her reasoning. Now, after her frantic attempts to get pregnant last night, it felt especially strange.
“I thought you wanted time,” I said.
“I did,” she replied. “But I changed my mind. I was thinking we could hold a ceremony this weekend. Small, just you and me and Bjorn and a few members of the—”
I stared at her for a long time, certain I’d misheard. Avery loved her company. She’d worked like hell to make Lycan Root, and all of her products, possible. She’d bent over backwards to incorporate human life and the packs into one, finding a balance between both.
And now she was saying she wanted to give it all up before her perfume was even complete? And saying she wanted more kids and a wedding in literal days?
“This isn’t like you,” I said. I softened a little. “Avery, I can tell you’re under a lot of stress right now, and I’m afraid you’re making decisions you’ll regret later. Maybe you should go spend some time in the greenhouse, amongst your work and your plants, and wait before you make up your mind like this.”
Avery’s eyes darkened again. Her mouth opened like she wanted to argue.
But she stopped. Slammed that almost eerie smile back into place, pushed off the windowsill, and nodded.
“Okay. If that’s what you think is natural for me, then I should probably do it.”

Why is Avery constantly projected as a weak, Gideon-centered female? It’s draining please I hope you can do better on your next lead female....
