Although Mateo couldn't make out the figure's face beneath the moonlight, he knew he had walked right into a trap. In a low, steady voice, he asked, "They call me the Falcon. And you are?"
"A falcon? Is that some kind of food?" the figure mused as they stepped closer. Under the full moon's glow, Wolf stood revealed.
Wolf was about to turn in for the night when the sudden tang of blood hit him—the kind worn by those who had taken lives. After reporting to Antoine, he swiftly headed to the dungeon. Spotting the unconscious guards on the ground, he realized that the intruder had come for Lorcan.
As Wolf's face came to view, Mateo loosened a frown. He had expected a powerful opponent, yet it turned out to be a child.
"Get lost if you want to live. I'm busy," Mateo warned, moving to drag Lorcan away.
But just as he reached Wolf's side, the latter stated firmly, "You're not taking him away, and you're not leaving, either."
Mateo couldn't help but laugh at those words. "You? You're just a brat. One hand is all I need to—"
Before Mateo could finish his taunt, a gentle swing from Wolf sent him stumbling backwards. Instantly on guard, he realized Wolf's physical strength far surpassed his young age—even overpowering his own.
"Who on earth are you? I've never seen anyone like you in all my years in Havenia," Mateo questioned cautiously.
Wolf flashed a toothy grin. "You just haven't built a name for yourself. That's why."
Mateo's pride as a skilled assassin took a harsh blow. He glared at Wolf and snapped back, "You've got a sharp tongue for someone your age. But nobody beats me when I'm serious."
With that, Mateo tossed Lorcan aside and lunged at Wolf. His clenched fist sliced through the air with raw force. Wolf appeared unfazed, raising an arm and stretching out his palm to meet the incoming attack.
The instant Mateo's fist collided with the palm, he was shoved back by an unseen force, yet Wolf stood firm without flinching. He wagged a finger at Mateo, silently taunting the pathetic display.
Infuriated, Mateo snapped his leg up in a fierce kick. If his arms couldn't beat Wolf, his legs would do the talking. Yet, the moment his toes touched Wolf's shirt, he suddenly froze. No matter how hard he pushed, he couldn't move an inch. It was as if he were up against solid steel.
Grinning widely, Wolf grabbed Mateo's ankles and swung him around, singing, "Windmills turn around and around!"
At that point, Mateo was completely stupefied. Being spun around like a windmill was one thing, but having the tune sung at him was downright humiliating.
After a fierce struggle, Mateo finally wrenched his ankle free from Wolf's grasp, hissing coldly through gritted teeth, "I never expected to mess up a big time. Guess I'm not going anywhere tonight. However—"
Before he could finish his words, Wolf stomped hard on the ground. A powerful shockwave blasted toward Mateo, sending him hurtling several feet away.
"Are you trying to take Lorcan away behind my back? What a shame. I've already seen through your plans," Wolf commented, brushing the dirt off his hands.
Mateo, now slumped to the ground, dribbled some blood from his mouth at his words. "You're… scary."
Wolf shook his head. "Boss said I'm cute, not scary. That means you're questioning her judgment. You're as good as dead now."
As Wolf closed in, a crushing wave of intimidation swept over Mateo. His breath hitched, and fear flickered in his eyes for the first time. He realized that Wolf was no ordinary human, not after experiencing that stomp that sent him across the room.
Lorcan, who had been watching from the sidelines, felt relieved that Wolf had gone easy on him last time.
Just as Wolf had completely subdued Mateo, Antoine arrived at the dungeon. Wolf dusted off his hands and headed over to Antoine.
Inside the emerald pendant, Jemima broke down into tears as the audio played.
The recording was brief, but it was more than enough to convict Curtis of his crime. As Antoine removed the USB, he believed that Curtis would be brought to justice once the video reached the higher-ups.
With that assurance, Antoine left the room to make a call. The line connected after a moment, and he spoke first. "You're still up at this hour?"
A soft chuckle came from the other end. "Yeah. I just finished reviewing some documents. What's up?"
"It's about Curtis Lottway," Antoine replied.
When Ronald Lockridge heard that the matter involved Curtis, his gaze turned serious. "What about him?"
"Do you remember the gas poisoning case in a residential area a few years ago? It was ruled as an accident, only that it wasn't. It was a planned murder, and the one behind it was Curtis," Antoine disclosed.
"Are you sure about that? Do you have any proof?" Ronald asked sharply.
"I do."
A brief silence followed before Ronald replied, "Send it over. If what you're saying is true, I'll make sure he ends up behind bars."
"Understood. I'll head over to your place right away," Antoine agreed and ended the call.
Without hesitation, he ushered the chauffeur to drive him to Ronald's residence, insisting on delivering the USB in person. After all, no one had suspected what appeared to be a tragic accident was actually a cold-blooded murder—orchestrated by Curtis Lottway, Havenia's deputy mayor.
