The Heiress’ Return: Six Brothers at Her Beck and Call (Wynter Quinnell) novel Chapter 1946

Freddy couldn't stop his heart from sinking. He wasn't an idiot and was aware of certain things. Precisely because of that, he looked at Wynter with gradually widening eyes. "W-Who exactly are you?"

Wynter held a document in her hand. "Aren't you very familiar with that, Mr. Artie? I'm someone from a village in Colifernia on the mainland. Could there have been an issue with your investigation?"

She was calm and collected as she spoke, as if everything was within her grasp.

Freddy clenched his fists, his teeth clacking together uncontrollably. "Why are you interrogating me? This is a private trial!"

"As the name implies, it's because I'm qualified to do so," Wynter replied, tapping her fingers rhythmically on the desk. "I know much about you, so I used myself as bait. On the contrary, you've only scratched the surface of my identity.

"I know that the people supporting you must have told you a lot. No matter how terrible the crimes you commit, you'll have someone to bail you out.

"Still, you should be aware why I brought up the term 'sacrificial pawn.' Back in Mordawn, that police inspector could have taken you away as well. However, that foreigner was more important than you, so he was the one they took instead."

Freddy had already begun to tremble. Those people had indeed once told him that no matter how big an incident he caused, they would protect him from the consequences so long as he diligently accomplished his assigned tasks.

Wynter looked as if she were just here to run through the necessary procedures. She flipped through some documents.

"I don't have much time. I can tell you one thing, though—someone is currently looking for you, but it's someone who wants you to disappear."

Every word that left Wynter's mouth only caused Freddy's fists to clench tighter. He didn't know why Wynter would know this in such detail. Who exactly was she?

He couldn't stand it any longer. He gripped the chair's armrests tightly and shouted, "Who exactly are you?"

He even attempted to stand, but his hands were still cuffed. Wynter's words frightened him.

Wynter glanced at him and replied, "I'm someone who can keep you locked up here. Who do you think I am?"

Freddy racked his brains for an answer. She definitely wasn't affiliated with the Havenian police, but who would she be when she was from the mainland?

Wynter tapped her fingers on the desk. "Alright, that's enough of that. It doesn't matter who I am. What matters is whether or not you're going to cooperate."

Freddy's teeth chattered. "You're too scary! Even if you're someone from the mainland's police force, you wouldn't have law enforcement rights in Havenia. That's right—you must be a police officer from the mainland."

Wynter couldn't help shaking her head. "Think what you will. What's important right now is whether you're going to cooperate. This is your last chance, so think about it carefully. Would you rather become their scapegoat or drag them down with you?"

Her tone was calm and even, as if she were merely stating a fact.

"Do you think I'll tell you everything I know just because you're from the mainland police?" Freddy shouted. "Dream on, Wynter Quinnell! So what if I'm locked up? I'd certainly like to see if you'll be able to sign my death warrant with the information you have!"

He intended to throw caution to the wind and double down on his stance. After all, if he were to weigh one against the other, the mainland police were nothing to fear. On the other hand, if the foreign forces wanted to have him killed, it would be as easy as crushing an ant beneath their heel.

However, Wynter wasn't surprised by this at all. She simply stood and said, "You seem to have misunderstood what I meant just now, Mr. Artie.

"If you tell me everything you know, your son overseas might still be able to live a peaceful life. But if you don't, his happy life will come to an abrupt end."

The moment those words left her mouth, Freddy wanted nothing more than to break out of his handcuffs. "What are you going to do? I'll have you know that no matter what crimes I've committed, you have no grounds to harass my son! How can you call yourself a police officer otherwise?"
