Hyrum suddenly halted. "It seems I've overlooked something. How do you prove you were sent by Cascadia's high command?"
Wynter stepped forward, drawing out a temporary credential. "Wynter Quinnell. This credential will verify my identity."
Hyrum nodded lightly. "I'll contact my superiors for confirmation. In the meantime, please remain here."
Just then, an officer reported, "Mr. Grover, we have two ringleaders captive—Frankie and Kenith—as well as 50 enforcers. 40 victims were rescued. All communication equipment, scam scripts, and related evidence are secured."
Hyrum nodded. "Send the victims to the embassy immediately. Not a single mishap is allowed."
The officer paused, then answered, "Yes, sir."
Hyrum turned to Wynter. "Ms. Quinnell, please wait here. I'll call my superiors for verification. Once that's settled, we'll move out to seek out the other scam dens together. Let's wipe them out in one go."
"Fine," she replied curtly.
With that, Hyrum headed toward the exit with Wynter's temporary credential in hand. As he walked, he rubbed the cover with his fingertips, giving it a few strokes.
The small gesture deepened Wynter's suspicion. Real officers checked documents briskly, confirming details. They do not caress the cover as though testing its make.
Out of sight, Hyrum dialed his superior. "Sir, I've encountered the Cascadian operative. I need you to verify her credentials."
His voice was deferential.
From afar, Wynter watched his every move, her gaze cool and steady. When it came to credentials, she had absolute confidence. Even if Hyrum wasn't an ordinary police chief, he wouldn't dare claim forgery against that document.
"Is there trouble?" Dalton murmured, standing close.
Wynter nodded lightly. "Hyrum's timing is too perfect. It's hard not to doubt him."
Dalton's eyes were calm. "If he's compromised, those rescued today might fall right back into his hands."
At that moment, Kenith was being dragged past by two officers. He stopped, sneering at Wynter.
"You bitch! Just wait. It won't be long before you fall into my hands. Then, you'll beg for death, and I won't let you have it! Hahaha!"
The laughter cut short as Hyrum strode up and slapped him across the face before turning to an officer nearby. "Useless! How could you let this idiot threaten a Cascadian envoy? If word of this gets out, we'll get in trouble!"
"Sorry, sir! We'll remove him immediately." The officers hustled Kenith away in a hurry.
After that, Hyrum returned Wynter's credentials with both hands. "My apologies for the disturbance, Ms. Quinnell. I've confirmed with my superiors. Your credentials are authentic."
Wynter slipped it away. "Mr. Grover, how do you propose we find the other dens?"
His brow furrowed. "From what I've gathered, Frankie and Kenith are just small fries. There are several more dens, all closely linked. If we process these two formally now, word will leak. That could severely impede our operation."
"Oh?" Wynter lifted her gaze calmly. "And what's your plan?"
"We can skip the official process, for now. I'll send the enforcers back quietly. As for Frankie and Kenith, I'll have undercover officers stage a rescue. Once they think they're safe, we can squeeze them for the other dens' locations. Then, we strike all at once."
Wynter curved her lips. The plan sounded airtight on paper, solving the problem at its roots while avoiding the potential moles in the police force.
Her eyes bored into him. "That's a clever plan, Mr. Grover, but it's risky. You saw it yourself how Kenith boasted, certain that his boss would save him. Men like that don't break easily. And, without proper preparation, one mishap could spiral into chaos."
"Ms. Quinnell, risk is inevitable. I'll bear the consequences myself." His tone suddenly hardened as he continued, "Or do you mean to leave the other victims to be beaten and tormented? Every moment we delay, they suffer.
"I've wanted to save them for so long. But without any leads, I was powerless to act."
Wynter tilted her head, her faint smile edged with mischief. "I can feel the passion and empathize with your words. Mr. Grover, I'll go along with your plan. Let's hope it goes through perfectly."
"Thank you for your trust, Ms. Quinnell."
Then, Hyrum pivoted, facing his men in the courtyard. "Gather up!"
He stood before the other officers and announced, "Next, we'll be cracking down on the other dens. Leave 15 men here to secure the site. Don't let any stragglers escape."
"Yes, sir!" The answer rang loud across the courtyard.
Wynter's brows knitted faintly before she turned her gaze to Wolf. "I have a task for you. Escort the victims to the embassy."
Wolf tilted his head. "Huh? You don't trust them?"
Her eyes darkened. "It's just a precaution. I don't want them jumping into the fire right after escaping the frying pan. That's why I need you to protect them."
Wolf nodded. "If something happens, where should I take them?"
She pulled a slip of paper from her sleeve. "Find a chance to contact this number. Someone will come."
He took the paper with a telephone number written on it and quickly tucked it away.
Just then, an officer approached. "Mr. Grover, all 40 victims are loaded on the vehicles."
Hyrum waved at him. "Good. Move them to the embassy right now. Be vigilant!"
Just as the officer received his order, Wynter approached with Wolf in tow. "Mr. Grover, let my brother go with them."
"Your brother?" Hyrum's eyes dropped to Wolf, checking him out. "Very well. But if they're ambushed mid-route, it'll be dangerous."
Wynter's tone was cool. "It's fine. My brother's a tough one. If danger comes, he won't regret it. He's doing this for Cascadia."
Hyrum gave a small nod. Wolf's harmless smile seemed to disarm him, lowering his guard.
In actuality, Hyrum's real plan was to relocate the victims and use them as resources to start another den.
He leaned close to one of the officers and whispered, "When you arrive, deal with the boy. Leave no traces behind."
"Yes, sir. Consider it done," the officer replied in an equally hushed tone. He ushered Wolf onto the vehicle with the others, escorting the victims away.
After that, Hyrum straightened his pose and barked, "Everyone, move out! Sweep the dens clean!"
