Chapter 101

BRANDON’S POV

That news changed nothing.

If the real owner of the truck had died three years ago, then whoever planned the attack had covered their tracks carefully. It was smart. Too smart.

And I hated that.

I looked at Aria one more time before standing up from the chair beside her bed. She still had not moved. Her face looked pale against the white sheets and every second she stayed unconscious made something dark grow inside me.

“You better wake up soon,” I muttered quietly. “Because I’m running out of patience.”

She did not respond.

I exhaled sharply and walked out of the room before pulling out my phone. The call connected almost immediately.

“Dominic,” I said coldly.

“Yes, boss.”

“Find the truck.”

“We’re already searching.”

“I don’t care,” I snapped. “Search harder.”

There was a brief pause before he answered carefully, “We traced the last location it was seen.”

“Where?”

“A dump site outside the city.”

My jaw tightened instantly. “I’m coming.” The drive there felt longer than it should have. By the time I arrived, Dominic and two other men were already waiting for me.

The truck looked terrible.

The front was crushed badly and part of it had already started rusting from being left out. Someone had abandoned it there like trash.

I stared at it for a long moment before speaking. “Tell me you found something useful.”

Dominic exchanged glances with the others before answering. “We checked for fingerprints.”

“And?”

“They were altered.”

I looked at him slowly. “Altered?”

“Yes,” he said. “Some were wiped completely. Others were smudged on purpose.”

I laughed bitterly. “Of course they were.”

“We’re still trying to recover something.”

“But you have nothing right now,” I cut in. Silence answered me. That alone pissed me off. I turned away from the truck and dragged a hand down my face. “Nothing is working,” I muttered.

“We’ll keep digging.” Dominic said carefully.

“You better,” I replied sharply. “Because somebody almost killed her.”

Nobody answered that.

My eyes returned to the truck again. “Check nearby cameras,” I ordered. “Gas stations. Roads. Private buildings. Anything.”

“We already started.”

“Good.” I started walking back toward the car before stopping suddenly. “And Dominic?”

“Yes, boss?”

“Remember what I said. When we find whoever did this, I want them alive.”

His expression darkened slightly. “Understood.”

“No police,” I added. “No mistakes.”

“Yes, boss.”

When I returned to the hospital, nothing had changed. Aria was still unconscious.

The doctor had adjusted some machines and nurses moved in and out quietly, but none of that mattered to

She still had not opened her eyes. I stood beside the bed, staring at her. “You’re making this very difficult,” I said quietly.

Still nothing. My phone rang again. Blake. I stared at the screen before declining the call immediately.

A few seconds later, it rang again. Blake. I scoffed. “Persistent idiot.” I declined it again. Then another call came almost immediately.

This time, it was Julian Vance. I frowned at the screen. For a second, I considered answering. Then I remembered who he was.

Or rather, who he could be. During the background checks I had done on Aria months ago, his name came up more than once, Julian. Someone she had history with.

And now she was pregnant. My jaw tightened. “What if it’s his?” the thought came suddenly. I hated it immediately. I declined the call without answering.

Then I tossed the phone onto the chair beside me. “The last thing I need right now is more problems,” I muttered.

I sat down again and leaned back tiredly. I had not slept properly since the accident happened. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the crash.

The truck speeding toward them. The car going over the cliff. Aria inside it. I rubbed my face slowly. “Damn it.” A knock came on the door before the doctor stepped inside again.

His expression alone told me I was not going to like whatever he had to say. “What now?” I asked immediately.

“We need to discuss her condition.”

My chest tightened slightly. “Talk.”

The doctor glanced briefly toward Aria before looking back at me. “Her body is getting weaker.”

I stood up instantly. “What does that mean?”

“The pregnancy is putting pressure on her system,” he explained carefully. “Combined with the trauma from the accident, it’s becoming dangerous.”

I stared at him. “Dangerous for who?”

“For both of them.”

Silence filled the room. “What are my options?” I asked finally.

He hesitated slightly before answering. “If things continue this way, we may need to deliver the baby early.”

“How early?”

“Seven months.”

I looked at Aria again. “She’s not ready for that.”

“No,” he admitted. “But we may not have a choice.”

I felt anger rise immediately. “There has to be another solution.”

“We’re trying everything we can.”

That answer annoyed me instantly. “I’m tired of hearing that.”
