Everything felt heavy.

My body trembled slightly while strange sounds echoed around me. I could hear voices. Fast footsteps. Machines beeping loudly.
And then I heard it again. A baby crying. The sound pierced through the darkness around me so sharply that my chest tightened painfully.
Something inside me reacted immediately. That cry. It felt familiar. Important.
My fingers twitched weakly against the sheets as another wave of pain spread through my body. The voices around me became clearer little by little.
“Her fingers moved again.”
“Heart rate is stabilizing.”
“Miss Aria, can you hear me?”
My eyelids felt unbearably heavy, but slowly, painfully, I forced them open. Bright light hit my eyes immediately.
I blinked several times in confusion before shapes slowly became clearer. Doctors. Nurses. Machines. And then Brandon.
He stood near the bed holding a tiny baby carefully against his chest while staring at me like he had forgotten how to breathe.
For a moment, nobody moved. Then the doctor stepped closer quickly. “Miss Aria?”
I swallowed painfully. “W… what happened?”
Relief crossed the doctor’s face instantly. “You’re awake.”
The room suddenly became busy again. “Check her vitals.”
“Her response is stable.”
“Get another scan ready.”
Questions came from every direction, but I barely heard any of them. My eyes stayed fixed on the baby in Brandon’s arms.
The baby who had finally gone quiet. The baby was staring around sleepily with tiny little movements. My breathing shook slightly as tears immediately filled my eyes. The doctors continued checking me for

several minutes before finally stepping back. “She’s stable for now,” one of them said.
Another nurse smiled softly. “You gave us a scare.”

I barely responded because my attention stayed on the child Brandon was holding. Then slowly, my eyes moved downward toward my stomach.
Flat. My breath caught immediately. A faint pain spread across my lower abdomen and realization hit me instantly. The accident. The baby.
Everything came rushing back so fast that tears rolled down my cheeks before I could stop them.
The doctors quietly left after giving Brandon a few instructions. Soon, the room became silent again except for the soft sounds from the machines.
Neither of us spoke immediately. Brandon just stood there staring at me while holding the baby carefully like he was scared this moment would disappear.
I looked at him slowly. His eyes looked exhausted. Red. Tired. Like he had not slept properly in weeks. Then finally, he walked closer to the bed.
Without speaking, he carefully placed the baby into my arms. The moment I held her, I broke completely. A sob escaped my throat before I could stop it.
“She’s so small,” I whispered shakily. The baby shifted softly against my chest while I stared at her tiny face through blurred tears. “She’s beautiful,” I whispered.
My hands trembled slightly while touching her carefully. Fear mixed with happiness so strongly inside me that I could barely breathe through it.
Then suddenly, another hand wrapped tightly around mine. Brandon. I looked up immediately. And for the first time since I met him, I saw tears in his eyes too.
Real tears. Not anger. Not frustration. Just emotion he could not hide anymore. Neither of us spoke for a long time. We just sat there quietly while tears fell silently and the baby rested between us.
The room felt strangely warm despite everything.
After several minutes, I finally managed to speak again while looking down at my daughter. “She looks angry already.”
A quiet laugh escaped Brandon immediately. “That definitely comes from you.” I smiled weakly. Then silence returned briefly before Brandon spoke again. “You scared the hell out of me,” he said quietly.
I looked at him slowly. “I thought I lost you,” he admitted.
Something about the way he said it made my chest tighten. His fingers tightened slightly around my hand before he continued speaking.
“You stayed unconscious for over a month,” he said quietly. “There were days the doctors thought you wouldn’t wake up.”

He nodded slowly. “You kept fighting anyway,” he continued. “Even after the surgery. Even after everything.”
I swallowed painfully. “What surgery?”
“The baby came early,” he explained carefully. “Your body couldn’t handle the pregnancy and the accident together.”
My eyes immediately filled again as I looked down at my daughter. “She almost died too,” he admitted quietly. “But she fought through it.”
I kissed the baby’s forehead gently while tears rolled down my cheeks again. Brandon exhaled slowly before continuing. “The driver died.”
I froze immediately. “What?”
“He protected you during the crash,” Brandon said quietly. “But he didn’t survive.”
Pain spread through my chest instantly. “Oh my God…”
“He saved both of you.” I closed my eyes briefly while holding my daughter closer. Everything felt overwhelming.
But then another memory surfaced suddenly. The truck. My eyes opened immediately. “Brandon.”
His expression sharpened instantly. “What?”
“The accident…” I swallowed hard. “It wasn’t random.” His jaw tightened immediately. “There was enough space on the road,” I continued quietly. “The truck could have avoided us.”
I looked up at him slowly. “But it came directly at us.”
Silence filled the room immediately. Then Brandon nodded slowly. “I know.”
A cold feeling spread through my body instantly. “What do you mean you know?”
