Something inside me softened painfully at those words. But before I could say anything else, she suddenly turned toward Amelia’s crib and started gathering the baby’s things quickly.

My chest tightened immediately. “What are you doing?”

“I’m leaving.”

She ignored me completely and grabbed Amelia’s diaper bag. I moved toward her instantly and stood directly in front of the door.

“You’re not going anywhere upset and exhausted while carrying a newborn.”

“No.”

Her eyes widened slightly at my tone. “Brandon,”

“You can yell at me all you want later,” I said firmly. “But you are not walking out of this house right now.”

“You can’t force me to stay here.”

The words slammed into me so hard that for a moment, I genuinely stopped breathing. Silence filled the room instantly afterward.

I stared at her while something painful twisted violently inside my chest.

Because despite everything, despite knowing Amelia was not mine biologically, I had loved that little girl from the very first moment I held her.
