My heart skipped. “Zayn-”
“No. Don’t-” His voice cracked as he brushed a thumb under my jaw “Something happened. I felt-” He cut himself off, jaw locking, as if he’d said too much.
I blinked up at him, thrown. “You… felt what?”
He didn’t answer. Instead, he moved–his fingers tracing down my arms, searching for injuries I wasn’t even sure existed. Each touch was frantic, almost urgent, like he needed proof I was still in one piece.
“I’m fine,” I whispered.
His grip tightened–not enough to hurt, but enough to say he didn’t believe me for a second.
“How did you get hurt?” He pushed, scanning every inch of me like he expected blood to appear if he stared long enough.
“I’m not hurt,” I managed.
That only seemed to frustrate him more. His thumb traced along my cheekbone–gentle, careful–but the rest of him looked two
seconds from breaking.
“Don’t lie to me,” he said.
A shiver crawled up my spine because the way he said it wasn’t angry–it was afraid.
“How did you even know something was wrong?”
His eyes flicked away–just for a second.
Like he was debating something.
Like he almost slipped.
“It doesn’t matter,” he muttered.
“It matters to me.”
“Aurora,” he growled, eyes darting over my shoulder toward the girls watching in stunned silence. “Tell me.”
I opened my mouth–closed it again.
His eyes snapped back to mine.

My chin lifted. “I didn’t know it was dangerous‘
He shook his head, stepping closer again–close enough that I had te tilt my chin up to keep eye contact.
His eyes tracked down my body one more time–another quick scan for injuries–then back to my face
“I’m not letting anything happen to you,” he said, voice steady in a way that stole my breath a little. “Not again.”
Again?
Before I could ask what he meant, he added–softer, like something raw slipped through.

Chapter 155
“You have no idea how close I came to losing you.”
My heart stumbled.
He didn’t look away.
He didn’t step back.
He stood there like he had every right to protect me
–
like he’d burn the world down if I said someone hurt me.
Before I could even process what Zayn just said, a rapid, frantic pounding rattled the door behind him.
Mira jumped. Lira whispered, “Again?” under her breath.
Only one person knocked like he was trying to break the damn building.
Kael.

Zayn’s shoulders went rigid–his eyes narrowing at the door like it personally offended him. He didn’t move away from me, though.
Not even an inch.
“Aurora!” Kael’s voice came through sharp, breathless. “Open the door!”
I exhaled shakily and shoved past Zayn, ignoring the way he tensed as if he hated the idea of me going near anyone else right now.
The moment the door cracked open, Kael practically shoved his way inside.
His gaze scanned me first–quick, assessing–like he was checking for wounds. Then his eyes landed on Zayn.
All the concern in his face vanished.
“What the hell is he doing here?” Kael demanded, voice edged with too much anger to hide.
Before I could answer, he turned back to me–jaw tight, eyes burning
“I told you not to let anyone in,” he said, low but furious. “What’s he doing in your room, Aurora?”
I stepped between them instinctively–palms out, like that would help.
“Kael, stop–nothing happened. He just-”
“He just what?” Kael snapped, eyes locked on Zayn now. “Showed up out of nowhere? That’s not concerning at all, right?”
Zayn’s voice came in cold and controlled.
“I’m not the one you should be worried about.”

Chapter 155
Kael barked a humorless laugh. “Right. Because you have such a stellar track record at keeping her safe.”
Zayn’s jaw clenched, his fists curling again–fresh blood cracking over old.
“Enough,” I said–louder than I intended.
Both their eyes snapped to me.
I swallowed and tried again, steadier.
“I called Kael,” I said to Zayn. “I needed him here.”
Then I turned to Kael, frustration pushing into my voice.
“And Zayn came because he… just knew something was wrong.”
Kael looked between us–suspicion simmering under his skin.
“How?” he asked.
Zayn’s expression didn’t change.
“It doesn’t matter.”
Kael stepped forward, not breaking eye contact.
“It matters to me.”

Zayn stepped forward too.
“Oh, I know,” he replied evenly. “Everything does–when it comes to her.”
Their chests were practically brushing now.
I squeezed myself between them again–small hands pushing at solid muscle that did not budge.
“Hey,” I snapped. “This isn’t a turf war. Someone literally delivered a blood–covered necklace and maybe killed the only person who had answers. So maybe both of you could stop measuring your egos long enough to focus on that?”
Kael finally dragged his gaze away from Zayn and looked back at me expression softening by a fraction.
“You’re right,” he muttered. “Sorry.”
Zayn didn’t apologize–of course he didn’t–but he stepped back a few inches, which honestly felt like the closest he’d ever come.
My heart was still racing when Kael’s voice dropped again, quieter now.
“I’m not leaving you alone tonight,” he said. “Not after this.”

Chapter 155
Before I could respond, Zayn cut in–his voice a low promise.
“She’s not staying with you.”
Kael’s head snapped toward him. “She’s safer with me than with-”
“I’m the one who came here first,” Zayn interrupted. “Not you.”
Kael laughed once–but there wasn’t a single trace of humor.
“And I’m the one she called.”
Zayn’s laugh was rough, humorless.
“She called you because she thought I wouldn’t care.”
His eyes flicked to mine–pain flickering through the anger.
“That’s on me. Not her.”
Kael tilted his head, eyes dark.
“She called me because you burned every bridge you had with her.”
so we all agree Kael is the best right? manNnNNNn
