The mug slipped from my hands before I even realized my fingers had gone numb. It hit the floor with a dull crack, ceramic

shattering, liquid spilling everywherebut the sound felt distant, like it didn’t belong to this moment. Like it came from somewhere

far away.

He’s here.

The thought landed heavy and sharp in my chest, knocking the air out of me. My father. Standing right there, on the other side of

the door, as if he hadn’t been absent my entire life. As if the world hadn’t twisted itself into something unrecognizable just to keep

us apart.

Why now?

My heart was pounding so hard it almost hurt. I swallowed, forcing my body to move, even though every instinct told me to stay

exactly where I was. Slowly, carefully, I stood up. My legs felt weak, like they might give out at any second, but I turned anyway.

Cecilia was still in the doorway.

She hadn’t moved. Not even an inch. Her back was straight, her shoulders tense, like she was holding herself together through sheer

force of will. She looked small standing there, framed by the open door, by the world outside that had just walked back into her life

without permission.

And there he was.

Tall. Broadshouldered. He filled the doorway effortlessly, like he belonged therelike he belonged anywhere he chose to stand. His

hair was dark, almost black, falling loosely around his face, touched with the faintest hint of gray at the temples. He was dressed

simply but expensively: a dark coat fitted perfectly to his frame, heaty boots marked with travel and wear, gloves tucked into one

hand like he’d just pulled them off before knocking. Everything about him spoke of control. Of power. Of someone used to being

listened to.

He didn’t look surprised.

That hurt more than I expected.

For a moment, his attention stayed on Cecilia, his expression unreadable, his face carved into something calm and guarded. Then-

slowlyhis gaze shifted.

Past her.

Straight to me.

The moment our eyes met, the world seemed to tilt. I forgot how to breathe. Forgot how to think. All I could do was stand there,

rooted to the spot, staring back at the man who had shaped my life without ever knowing I existed.

His eyes were sharp, dark, searching. They held a weight I couldn’t name, something old and heavy and deeply buried. I couldn’t tell

what he saw when he looked at merecognition, confusion, suspicionbut I felt exposed under his gaze, like he was seeing too

much and not enough at the same time.

No one spoke.

Cecilia didn’t turn around. I didn’t move. The air between us felt thick, stretched tight to the point it might snap. My heart was still

racing, my chest tight, my thoughts scattered and loud.

This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen.

Not like this.

What are you doing here? How-Cecilia spoke first, but he cut her off before she could finish.

You really thought I wouldn’t know you were in the Eastern woods? he said. I knew the moment you stepped into them. My men

have been keeping an eye on you ever since.

Her eyes widened, the composure she’d held onto until now cracking just slightly, like she genuinely couldn’t believe what she was hearing. For a brief moment, she looked caught between anger and disbelief, as if she were weighing whether this was real or just

another cruel turn of fate.

He noticed. Of course he did.

A low chuckle left him then, soft and almost amused, as though her reaction confirmed something he’d already known.

Oh, come on, Ce,he said easily. You’re smarter than that. His tone wasn’t sharp, but it wasn’t gentle either. It carried that quiet authority that didn’t need to raise its voice to be heard. You really thought Ithe kingwouldn’t know who’s on my territory? He tilted his head slightly, dark hair falling back from his face. Especially someone as powerful as you.

The words hung in the air, heavy with implication.

Cecilia’s jaw tightened. If you knew all this time, she asked, her vace steady but strained, then why now?She took a small step

forward, hands curling at her sides. Why did you come here now?

For a moment, he simply looked at her, as if the answer were obvious, as if she should have reached it on her own already. Then he

spoke again, slower this time, the faint edge of certainty never leaving his voice.

Because nothing changed,he said. Not once. Not since you came here a couple of years ago.His gaze didn’t waver. Nothing.

He gestured vaguely toward the cabin, the quiet woods beyond it. You were alone. No one came to see you. You didn’t visit anyone. You stayed exactly as you werequiet, hidden, untouched.

His eyes shifted then, just briefly, past Cecilia.

Except today,he continued. When they came.

The room felt tighter after that, like the walls had leaned in without anyone noticing. His attention sharpened, focused.

So I had to come and find out myself,he finished calmly, who they are.

She scoffed, the sound sharp and bitter, and dragged both hands through her hair like she needed the motion just to keep herself grounded. I watched her shoulders rise and fall once, controlled, restrained. He didn’t react at all. Not to her tone. Not to the edge in it. Not even to the fact that she still looked so young, unchanged in ways that should have been impossible. If anything, he looked almostunsurprised. Like this version of her fit perfectly into whatever image he’d carried all these years.

It’s none of your business who they are,she said, her voice cutting clean through the air. There was no hesitation in it, no

softness. Just a hard line drawn exactly where she wanted it. A boundary.

He didn’t move. Didn’t interrupt. Didn’t even look offended.

She took a step back then, turning slightly away from him, like she needed distance before she said anything else. Her jaw

tightened. I could see the tension in her neck, the way she swallowed before forcing the next words out.

You’d be better off taking care of your wife instead of-

She stopped herself.

The sentence snapped in half, unfinished, hanging there like something fragile she’d almost dropped. She turned her face further away, breaking eye contact completely now. And for just a secondjust enough for me to noticesomething slipped through her

control.

Was that jealousy?

It was subtle. Barely there. But it was in the way her voice had shifted at the end, softer and sharper at the same time. In the way

she’d cut herself off, like she’d said too much without meaning to. Like she’d remembered, too late, that some things weren’t hers

to claim anymore.
