Morning arrived quieth.

Not softly, not kindjust quietly, shipping into the cabin without asking permission. Pale light filtered through the thin curtains of Cecilia’s living room, spreading across the wooden floor in slow, muted streaks

For a moment, I didn’t move. I stayed where I was, Ning on the mattress, staring at the ceiling while my body tried to remember where I was and my mind refused to let go of the night.

The dream still clung to me.

Zade’s voice.

That smile.

The certainty in his eyes when he said he could find us

I shifted slightly and glanced at Zayn. He was still asleep beside me, breathing steady, face relaxed in a way that felt unfair considering everything that happened. I reached for my phone, already in my hand from the night before, and unlocked it.

Messages filled the screen.

All of them delivered.

Relief loosened something tight in my chest as I scrolled through the conversation thread. I had told them everythingabout Cecilia, about who she was, about why I’d disappeared without warning. I’d explained where I was, why I couldn’t give constant updates, why things were complicated and dangerous and not something I could break down in a single text.

They’d replied with panic first. Then relief. Then questions. Too many questions.

I answered what I could.

I told them I was safe.

That I’d explain more when I saw them.

That I loved them.

And then, after that, silence again. No signal strong enough to keep the conversation going. But it was enough. They knew. They weren’t in the dark anymore.

I locked the phone and let it fall back against my chest, exhaling slowly.

Zayn stirred beside me, rolling onto his back with a quiet breath. His eyes opened gradually, grey catching the early light before he turned his

head toward me.

Morning,he murmured, voice low and rough.

Chapter 291

Morning.

He studied my face for a second, longer than necessary. Did you sleep?

A little,I said. Not a lie. Just not the whole truth.

He didn’t push. He never did when it mattered. Instead, he sat up and stretched, rolling his shoulders like he was already preparing himself for

the weight of the day.

We folded the blankets together, stacked the pillows, rolled the mattress back against the wall the way Cecilia had shown us the night before. It felt oddly intimatedoing something so normal in a place that held so much history and so many unanswered questions.

Cecilia was already awake.

She stood in the kitchen when we stepped in, a mug in her hands, the fire crackling softly behind her. She looked at me the way she had since yesterdaycareful, steady, like she was still convincing herself I was real.

You’re heading back,she said quietly.

Zayn nodded. Just for now.

We packed quietly. Cecilia moved around the cabin with the same measured calm she always seemed to have, handing us mugs of something

watching us without hovering. Nothing more needed to be said. Everything important had already been spoken.

Outside, the woods were still, winter pressing close. The air bit at my lungs as we stepped out, and I pulled my jacket tighter around myself. Our car sat exactly where we’d left it, halfhidden by trees and shadow, like it had been holding its breath while we were gone.

The drive started slow.

The forest didn’t give way easily, and the first stretch was little more than patience and careful maneuveringtires crunching over gravel, branches brushing against the sides of the car, the road slowly becoming recognizable again. When we finally hit something that resembled pavement, it felt like resurfacing after being underwater too long.

Hours passed

We talked a little. Mostly, we didn’t.

The world outside the windows changed graduallydense woods thinning into stretches of open land, gray sky hanging low above everything. We stopped at a gas station once, then again later, the smell of fuel and cheap coffee grounding in the most ordinary way possible. I checked my phone during one of the stops. Signal flickered, then steadied.

Messages cate through

My roommates.

Asking me if I’m okay.

I answered, letting them know I was okay and heading back, then slipped the phone back into my pocket.

One message stayed unread.

Kael.

We need to talk. It’s urgent.

I didn’t open it.

By the time the sky began to darken, both of us were exhausted. Zayn pull into a small roadside motel without asking, and I didn’t argue.

The room was nothing specialtwo beds, a small bathroom, a flickering lightbut it was warm and quiet, and that was enough.

We didn’t talk much that night either.

I lay awake for a while, staring at the ceiling, listening to the muted sounds of the road outside. My thoughts kept circling back to the same

thingsCecilia, Theron, Zade. The way the past had reached forward and grabbed hold of my present without warning.

Eventually, exhaustion won.

Morning came again, brighter this time.

We were back on the road early, stopping once more for gas, for coffee, for something to eat. By the time the academy finally came into view, it

felt like we’d crossed more than just distance.

Winter break had settled over the place like a pause button. Fewer people. Quieter paths. No classes, no schedules pulling anyone in a dozen

directions at once. It made slipping back in easier.

Safer. For now.

Zayn parked and cut the engine. We sat there for a moment, neither of us moving.

We keep things normal,he said finally.

I nodded. As normal as we can.

In a week, everyone’s gone on the ski trip,he added. Less attention.

Less questions,I agreed.

If Zade had looked for us already and come up empty, this was the best move. Not because it was safebut because it was familiar. Predictable. And predictability bought time.

As we stepped out of the car, my phone buzzed again. I glanced at the screen, then

slipped it away without answering.

Later, I told myself.
