Lunch was ready sooner than I expected.

The scent drifted through the house firstwarm, familiar, comforting in a way that immediately pulled something loose in my chest. Roasted

chicken, herbs, something buttery and rich. My mom called up the stairs, her voice bright but gentle, telling us it was time.

We joined my parents in the dining room, the table already set. Not fancy, not stagedjustreal. Plates stacked neatly, glasses filled with

water, a basket of bread resting on a cloth. Steam curled lazily from the dishes as my mom brought the last one over and set it down.

Sit, sit,she said, waving us into our chairs. It’ll get cold.

Zayn pulled my chair out for me before taking his sea

beside me. It was such a small thing, but my mom noticed. I saw it in the way her smile

For a moment, no one spoke. We served ourselves, forks clinking softly against plates, the only sound filling the room. Then my dad cleared his

throat.

So,he said casually, looking between us, how’s academy life treating you these days?

I shrugged lightly. Busy. Intense. But good.

Zayn nodded beside me. She’s underselling it,he said. She works harder than anyone I know.

I shot him a look. That’s not true.

It is,he replied simply.

My mom smiled at that, pleased. I like him already.

Conversation picked up from there. Easy, unforced. My dad asked Zayn about his studies, his interests. Zayn answered politely, thoughtfully,

never saying more than necessary but never brushing anything off either. My mom chimed in with stories about neighbors, about work, about

how the city felt different during winter.

I found myself laughing more than I had in months.

The food was incredible. Not just because it tasted goodbut because it felt like home. Like a reminder of something steady and safe. I didn’t

realize how much I needed that until it was right in front of me.

When lunch was done, my mom waved us off from helping clean too much Go relax, she said. You’re guests.

We didn’t argue.

Before heading upstairs, though, my mom stopped in front of the Christmas tree. It stood tall in the corner of the living room, lights glowing

softly, ornaments catching the light. Beneath it, the space was still mostly empty.

She smiled knowingly. You two can put your gifts under the tree if you want.

Zayn glanced at me. I grinned.

We went to the suitcase, pulling out the small bags we’d tucked away days ago. Gifts I’d bought quietlycarefullyfor my parents, and one for Zayn. Simple things, but chosen with intention.

I placed my parentsgifts beneath the tree first, arranging them neatly. Zayn knelt beside me, setting down a few wrapped boxes of his own. My heart skipped when I realized they were all for me.

You didn’t have to,I murmured.

I wanted to,he said softly.

The lights reflected in the wrapping paper, casting warm shadows across the floor. For a moment, we just knelt there, quiet, looking at what

we’d placed beneath the treesmall promises waiting to be opened.

My mom pretended not to watch, but I saw her wipe at her eye.

She led us upstairs a few minutes later, down a quiet hallway that smelled faintly of clean linen and pine. She opened the door at the end.

This will be your room, she said.

The room was warm and inviting. A queensized bed with a thick duvet, soft lamps on either side, curtains drawn just enough to let moonlight slip through. A dresser stood against the wall, a small chair near the window. It feltcalm.

I hope it’s comfortable,she added.

It’s perfect,I said honestly.

She smiled, satisfied. Bathroom’s across the hall. Towels are ready. Let me know if you need anything.

Once she left, the house seemed to exhale.

Zayn set the suitcase down near the

dresser. Your parents areHe paused. Different than I expected.

In a good way?I asked.

He nodded. “In a very good way.

I went to shower first. The bathroom was warm, the water hot. I let it run over me longer than necessary, washing away the lingering tension

of the past weeks. When I finished, I brushed my teeth, dried my hair, and stared at my reflection.

The contacts were still in.

I hesitated, fingers hovering near my eyes. Eventually, I decided to leave them for now and headed back into the bedroom.

Zayn showered next. I unpacked slowly, folding clothes into the dresser, setting my phone on the nightstand. When he returned, hair damp,

wearing simple sleep clothes, I felt my chest tighten in that familiar way.

We went through our routine quietly. Phones plugged in. Lights dimmed. The world shrinking down to just the two of us.

Before bed, I shipped back into the bathroom one last time. This time, I removed my contacts carefully. Blinked, Silver and violet stared back at

me from the mirror.

I turned off the light and returned to the bedroom.

I slid into bed beside Zayn, the mattress dipping under my weight. He turned toward me immediately, arm wrapping around my waist, pulling me close. I tucked myself against his chest, his warmth steady and ground g

For a long while, we lay there in silence. The house creaked softly as it seled.

Somewhere downstairs, a clock ticked steadily. The heater hummed faintly

Zayn didn’t move.

At first, I thought he’d fallen asleep, But his breathing was too measured, too controlled.

I shifted slightly, tilting my head to look up at him. His eyes were open, staring at the ceiling.

Hey,I whispered. You okay?

He didn’t answer right away. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

Zayn?I asked again.

He turned his head then, finally meeting my gaze. His expression wasn’t angry or distantjust thoughtful. Careful.

Can I ask you something?he said quietly.

Of course.

He hesitated, his fingers tracing slow, absent patterns against my side.

Are you sure,he asked softly, that your parents are human?
