The Human Among Wolves (Aurora) novel Chapter 321

Chapter 321

Then I exhaled and started walking.

I didn’t take the stairs. I didn’t trust myself not to hesitate halfway up. The elevator was at the end of the hall, its soft light glowing like an invitation I very much didn’t want to accept. I pressed the button and waited, arms crossed tightly over my chest, pulse ticking away the

seconds he’d given me.

When the doors finally slid open, I stepped inside alone.

The ride up felt too short.

One floor. Just one. The numbers changed almost instantly, and my stomach twisted as the elevator slowed again. I straightened, forcing my shoulders back, my face into something neutral-something calm.

The doors opened.

I stepped out into another quiet hallway, identical to the one below, except now every step carried more weight. His room was somewhere

down here. 317.

I walked toward it, counting the doors as I passed them, my heart pounding louder with each number.

I stopped in front of his door and took a slow, steady breath, even though my chest felt anything but steady. My hand hovered in the air for a second before I knocked, my knuckles brushing the wood lightly-too lightly. I almost hoped he wouldn’t hear it.

I knew this was stupid. Reckless. Exactly the kind of decision I’d regret later.

A few seconds passed. Then the door opened.

Kael stood there in gray sweatpants and a black shirt, like this was just another ordinary night and not something that had my pulse racing. He looked at me at first, casual, almost amused-until his gaze lifted.

And froze.

His eyes went straight to mine.

F**k.

The realization hit me all at once, sharp and unforgiving. I hadn’t put my fontacts in. My vision was clear-too clear-and there was no hiding

it now.

For a heartbeat, neither of us moved. The air between us felt tight, charged, like something fragile had just cracked.

His expression shifted, the easy confidence faltering as his eyes searched my face, lingering far too long on my own.

“Your eyes…” he said slowly, his voice quieter now, careful. “Aurora.”

“I’m not here to talk about my eyes,” I said sharply, keeping my voice low despite the way my pulse hammered in my ears. “I’m here because you threatened me.”

“I wasn’t-” he started, then stopped himself. He dragged a hand through is hair and let out a quiet breath, like he was choosing his next words carefully. “It wasn’t a threat.”

I let out a short, humorless laugh. “Oh no?” I asked, my tone flat, dangers in its calm. “Then what was it?”

His jaw tightened. He glanced down the hallway for half a second, then stepped back, opening the door wider. “Come in,” he said. “We

shouldn’t talk about this out here.”

Every instinct screamed at me not to move. Not to cross that threshold. I held his gaze, unblinking, and took a step forward anyway.

The door closed behind me with a soft click.

“I shouldn’t have said it like that,” he admitted, turning to face me again. I was frustrated. You’ve been avoiding me.”

“Because I’m tired,” I shot back. “Because I don’t owe you anything.”

“I know,” he said quickly. “That’s not what I meant. I just-” He exhaled, shoulders dropping slightly. “I needed to talk to you. Alone.”

I crossed my arms, grounding myself. “You could’ve asked. Like a normal person.”

His mouth twitched, but there was no humor in it. “Would you have come

I didn’t answer. The silence stretched, heavy and uncomfortable.,

His eyes flicked to mine again-careful this time, almost wary. “You’re different,” he said quietly.
