The Human Among Wolves (Aurora) novel Chapter 401

Chapter 401

:

By the time we reached the final landing the city noise had completely disappeared.

The door opened into a quiet hallway lined with expensive carpet and dim lighting.

Luxury always liked its silence.

One guard stood halfway down the corridor, leaning casually against the wall as he scrolled through something on his phone. He didn’t

even look up before my hand closed around his throat and dragged him backward into the stairwell.

He went unconscious before he could make a sound.

We left him there.

The penthouse door stood at the end of the hall, thick steel framed in polished wood.

Viktor crouched beside the keypad and connected the small device from his pocket, fingers moving quickly while the screen blinked

through its security protocol.

Ten seconds later the lock clicked open.

The apartment beyond was enormous.

Glass walls stretched from floor to ceiling, revealing the sleeping city far below. Expensive furniture sat arranged with deliberate precision, every piece chosen to display wealth rather than comfort.

But the scent hit me immediately.

Fear.

Human.

My wolf stirred beneath my skin, restless and alert.

“She’s here,” I murmured.

We followed the scent down a long hallway until a closed door appeared at the end

The moment I pushed it open, I saw her.

Anastasia Mikhailova.

She sat curled against the far wall of a large bedroom, her wrists locked in silver restraints that glinted faintly in the lamplight. Her copper-red hair fell loosely around her shoulders, and the moment she saw us her entire body stiffened like a trapped animal preparing to

run.

Her eyes flicked to mine.

Then something changed in her expression.

Recognition.

“You’re not him,” she whispered hoarsely.

“No,” I said quietly, stepping closer.

Relief broke across her face so suddenly it almost hurt to see it.

Viktor moved forward to break the cuffs, the metal snapping open with a dull crack.

“We’re getting you out,” he told her.

But before either of us could say anything else-

The air shifted.

The change was subtle.

A sudden chill sliding across the back of my neck.

The instinctive warning that made my wolf freeze mid-step.

And then a voice drifted through the room.

Smooth.

Amused.

Ancient.

“Well… this is unexpected.”

I turned slowly.

Lazarus Sidorov stood in the doorway behind us.

Tall and pale beneath the dim light, his dark coat hanging loosely from his shoulders as if he had stepped out of the shadows themselves. His eyes glowed faintly red as they moved across the room, lingering on the broken restraints before finally settling on me.

For a moment he simply studied my face.

Then his lips curved slowly into a smile.

“Well, well,” he murmured softly. “A Lycan Prince in my home.”

The words rolled off his tongue like something entertaining rather than threatening.

“Tell me,” he continued calmly, taking a step forward, “did you really think you could walk into my city and leave unnoticed?”

My wolf snarled beneath my skin.

I stepped forward, placing myself between him and the girl without breaking eye contact.

“You’re letting her go.”

The vampire’s smile widened.

“Am 1?”

He moved before the words had fully left his mouth.

The impact came so fast it barely registered.

One moment I was standing.

The next something slammed into my ribs with enough force to send me crashing through the side table beside the bed. Wood splintered beneath my back as the wall caught me hard enough to drive the breath from my lungs.
