I crack an eye open and see nothing. The other one is practically glued shut-too swollen to function. As for the one I can use, I don’t know if I can’t see shit because I’m in a dark room, of because the eye has been blinded.

I vividly recall the struggle it took to get me into this small room in our basement earlier on. I fought against those wolves desperately, but there were too many of them. I couldn’t fight them all.

I know by now that this is my father’s doing. Of course, it is. Those wolves would never dare to attack me without my father’s permission.

The good thing is that they didn’t wait to follow me to the cabin but that doesn’t mean that my father won’t send them there to look for her. I’m worried. The sinking realization that I’m locked in this room, so far away from her and helpless, fills me with rage.

I fight against the chains tying my arms behind the chair welded to the floor. I end up hurting myself even more. Though I can’t see them, my wrists are sore from trying to free myself earer. I’m sure they’ve been rubbed raw at this point.

“Fuck,” I grit out, sweat trickling down my face as I continue trying, ignoring the pain.

Suddenly, the heavy door of the room opens and my father walks in. He makes sure to turn the light on, and I’m forced to close my good eye. Now, I know I’m not blind. The room is just way too dark.

“Don’t hurt yourself more than you already have,” he comments ryly. The sound of his voice makes me want to do unspeakable things to him. “You’re not going to free yourself.”

I never hated my father before. That thought never once crossed my mind.

Now, I realize that I do.

“What’s the meaning of this?” I ask bitterly, spittle flying from my mouth. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing, Dad!?”

“You’ve lost your mind, son,” he claims calmly, eyes hard as he studies my face. “That Nocturn has influenced you. She has you wrapped around her finger. They have forbidden powers. They’re a threat to our world. Once upon a time, you understood this, Ryder.”

I don’t allow myself to focus too much on the fact that he’s referring to Aria as a Nocturn. He knows. Somehow, he knows, and there’s no use in my lying about it. “You’re wrong about that. You were wrong about everything, you and all those Alphas.”

He nods. “Spoken like someone who’s truly been manipulated. Where is she, Ryder?”

I scoff. “What makes you think I’d ever tell you?”

“Stop being a fool!” he yells. “Are you even listening to yourself! You could have any woman! You had a perfectly good fiancée and you discarded her for a…a nobody. A curse! Do you have any idea of the extent of their evil powers? They can control you with a snap of their fingers! If they take control of the world, we’re all done for. That is why we have always stood against them and made a point to destroy them all!”

“You don’t know her. She doesn’t want power.”

“It is in their blood to be in control! Take a look at how she seduced you! Why do you think that is? Why would she tie herself to the very person who would condemn her for her identity? She put herself in significant danger. Why?”

“You’re describing someone who isn’t her. She didn’t seduce me–I was the one who pursued her even though she pushed me away time and time again. We were fated mates. Our connection was chosen by the goddess. Aria is good. She has a good heart. You’re the monsters!”

“How do

you know that this isn’t her controlling you?” he questions. Use your head, Ryder! Don’t you realize what’s at stake here? This is all her doing. She turned you against me, your father. Against your pack!”

“You’re the one who caused this,” I grit out. “Aria had nothing to do with this. You tried to control me my whole life. This is where it ends.”

My father looks at me with barely-contained rage. Good. It relieves me to know that right now, he hates me as much as I hate him. There’s no way the two of us would ever be on the same side.

“Son.”

“Don’t call me that,” I spit. “I’m not your son. Not anymore. Not after this.”

“Do you realize what you’re giving up? Do you think that girl is worth all this trouble?” He steps closer to the chair. I don’t take my eyes off his face. “Right now, you’re as good as a traitor. Harboring Nocturns is a crime punishable by death. Tell me, are you willing to die for that girl? Do you think for a second that she would do the same for you?”

“None of this matters to me. You think I care about being Alpha You don’t even know what real power is, that’s why you supported the unfair killing of Nocturns.”

My father reacts like I’ve punched him in the gut. He looks left, ght, then breathes in sharply. “Ryder…I would have you tortured for this information, but this…this madness has affected your brain. I see it now. I was too late. I should have ordered her death when I had the chance. You won’t tell me? Fine. She’ll be found regardless. And once we get our hands on her, she’ll be hanged.”

The words settle in my gut and make me sick to my stomach. “If you touch her—!”

“You’ll thank me for it,” he states coldly. “But maybe you’ll be deal by then, so it won’t matter.”

He walks away and I throw myself forward, eager to be rid of the chains. If I could cut my own hands just to be free and prevent this from happening, I’d do it and wouldn’t even hesitate. I wish I could turn back time.

I would never leave the cabin; I should have known this would happen. I was a fool not to think about things.

If something happens to Aria, I won’t survive it.

I know I won’t.
