The X-ray results came back. The doctor had been right. She had two transverse process fractures in her lumbar spine.
“While the fractures aren’t severe, their location is critical. If you don’t rest properly, you’ll likely suffer from chronic back pain in the future. You were lucky. If the fractures had been worse, you could have been paralyzed from the waist down,” the doctor explained, pointing to the CT scan.
Vivica sat in her wheelchair, stunned into silence. Her own father and brother had beaten her so badly!
Joseph noticed her dazed expression and his brow tightened.
“Congratulations,” he said, his tone flat. “Your father is definitely going to prison this time. This qualifies as a serious assault, a criminal offense. He’s looking at a minimum of three years.”
Vivica looked up at him and replied with equal coolness, “Thank you so much.”
Seriously? Congratulating her when she was this injured.?
Since they were already at the hospital, they went ahead with the official injury assessment for the police report. Throughout the process, Vivica remained silent, only speaking in short, clipped sentences when the doctor asked her a question.
Joseph stood by, his expression just as dark and unreadable.
Roderic leaned in and whispered, “Boss, Ms. Lynn seems really upset.”
“No kidding.”
First abused by her husband, now beaten by her own father and brother—even a person of steel would be heartbroken, questioning everything.
“So, are we really going to send her father to prison?” Roderic asked.
“What, are you getting soft?”
Vivica dreaded telling Zavier she was injured again, but she had no choice. She took a deep breath and made the call.
Zavier answered quickly. “Hello, Vivica.”
“Zavier, I need to take some time off. I probably won’t be able to come in for the rest of the week,” Vivica said, her voice strained.
“What happened?” Zavier sounded surprised. “Is your son’s condition worse?”
“No, it’s not him. It’s me. I was injured… I have a fractured vertebra, and the doctor said I need to rest for a few days.”
While she was on the phone, Roderic pushed her wheelchair toward the parking lot. They reached Joseph’s car just as she was finishing her call.
Roderic opened the rear door, and Vivica instinctively tried to stand up to get in. But as soon as she put weight on her body, a searing pain shot through her back, draining all her strength in an instant. She cried out and collapsed back into the wheelchair, completely helpless.
