She turned her head to stare out the window again, eager to escape the awkward tension.
Joseph, however, continued to study her profile. After a long moment, he said, his voice laced with meaning, "It's never a bad thing to dream. You never know, sometimes they come true."
A warmth spread through Vivica's chest. She turned to look at him, and their eyes met. The atmosphere in the car shifted, becoming charged with an unspoken energy.
Suddenly, the Maybach came to a smooth stop.
Roderic's voice broke the spell. "Boss, Ms. Lynn, we've arrived at the hospital."
Vivica snapped back to reality, quickly pushing the car door open. "Right, let's get out. We need to get your boss to a doctor."
Joseph's lips pressed into a thin line as he shot a displeased look at his assistant in the front seat. Roderic immediately understood his mistake. "My apologies, boss. Next time, I'll check the timing before I speak…"
Though still a patient herself, Vivica insisted on staying with Joseph through his entire examination. When the doctor removed the brace from his torso and helped him out of his shirt, she gasped. Her face contorted in empathetic pain. His injury was far worse than she had imagined. A massive, dark bruise covered a large portion of his back, and the skin over his spine was broken and raw. No wonder his shirt had been stained with blood the day before.
"You're hurt this badly, and you're still running around everywhere?" she chided him, her voice thick with worry. "You should be resting."
Joseph couldn't see his own back. "Is it that bad?" he asked, his tone as casual as ever.
Vivica's mind reeled, unable to shake the image of the heavy chair crashing into him. She couldn't begin to imagine the pain. Realizing he was waiting for an answer, she met his gaze. "You saved me," she murmured. "This debt…"
"This life-saving debt," Joseph picked up smoothly, "how do you plan to repay it?"
"Being hospitalized is boring, and it's a waste of time," Joseph protested, ready to ignore the medical advice.
"It won't be boring," Vivica said quickly. "You can stay in Chaim's room. With him there to keep you company, you definitely won't be bored."
Joseph hadn't expected that suggestion. He went along with it. "If I'm sharing a room with Chaim, where will you be?"
"Oh, I'm fine now. I don't need to be admitted anymore," she said, then remembered something. "Right, we should ask our parents to call that specialist again. Maybe he can help you, too."
Joseph snorted. "'Our parents'? You seem to have gotten used to that title quite quickly."
Vivica flushed with embarrassment and lowered her eyes, remaining silent.
