Vivica tried to explain away her own denseness, hoping to salvage a shred of dignity.
But Joseph just shot her a cold look and said dismissively, “You’re hopelessly dense.”
Did she really think that he was desperate for a free meal from a government supervisor?
It finally clicked for Vivica—he had probably turned down the supervisor’s offer because he wanted her to ask, but she’d been too slow on the uptake. In the end, he’d been forced to spell it out for her.
The more she thought about it, the more embarrassed she felt, to the point where she couldn’t even meet his gaze.
But now that she understood, she immediately took the initiative. “So, what would you like to eat?”
Her fumbling had already ruined his appetite, and he couldn’t be bothered to answer.
This time, however, Vivica was quicker to adapt. As Roderic got out to open the car door, she seized the opportunity. While Joseph was getting settled inside, she leaned in and asked Roderic quietly, “Where does your boss usually like to eat?”
Roderic raised an eyebrow, surprised. “Are you treating him to lunch, Ms. Lynn?”
“Yes. Just take us to his favorite restaurant.”
Having given her instructions, Vivica got into the car. Joseph sat with a stony expression, clearly in no mood to talk to her, and she was too embarrassed to know what to say.
Still, the fact that he was willing to let her buy him lunch must mean he wasn’t completely repulsed by her. That thought offered her a small measure of comfort.
She still didn’t understand his mercurial moods, but for now, she was secretly thrilled that he was willing to spend time with her.
So that was his reasoning. Vivica’s heart warmed. She was surprised by his thoughtfulness and sensitivity.
He wouldn’t be this considerate if he didn’t care about her at all, would he? Did that mean… he cared about her?
She didn’t dare ask, but she secretly cherished this sign that he saw her as someone special.
They both fell silent again. But Joseph seemed to sense her realization, and his expression relaxed almost imperceptibly.
They arrived at an exclusive restaurant housed in a historic building with classic, elegant architecture. It was Vivica’s first time here.
At the entrance, there was a stone plaque detailing the history of the place. Vivica paused to read it.
