“What do you think of the decorations? If you have any other ideas, we can have them add to it.”
As soon as Vivica stepped into the sunroom, she was completely captivated.
The space had been transformed into a serene, deep-space wonderland. Against a backdrop of dark blue and silver, a model rocket nearly seven feet tall stood in the center. Behind it, a massive curtain depicted the Milky Way, sprinkled with glowing constellations, while several large, matte-finish planet balloons floated and spun slowly in the air.
The long dining table was covered with a velvet cloth printed with a nebula pattern, and at each place setting sat a small astronaut figurine.
The entire scene was filled with the pure magic of a child’s dream, making it feel as if they were dining in outer space.
Vivica stared, mesmerized. “It’s beautiful,” she breathed. “So elegant! Did you arrange all of this?”
She turned to Joseph, her eyes shining.
Seeing her happy reaction, his expression softened and a smile touched his lips. “I asked Chaim what kind of birthday party he wanted, and he said he wanted to be an astronaut. So I had a team design this theme. Since you like it so much, I’m sure he’ll love it.”
Vivica walked further into the room, still in a state of awe. Thinking of the love that Joseph and his parents had shown Chaim, she was once again overcome with emotion.
“Thank you,” she said, turning to him, her voice filled with sincerity. “You’ve all been so good to Chaim. You’re more attentive to him than I am.”
It was a lie he had to protect at all costs.
“We’re his family,” Joseph replied. “It’s only right that we do these things for him.”
Vivica looked at him, and though she said no more, the flood of gratitude and emotion once again threatened to overwhelm the composure she had fought so hard to maintain.
The birthday party was a joyous affair. Chaim was the center of the universe. Everyone doted on him, giving him whatever he wanted and delighting in everything he said. The little boy was all smiles, looking nothing like a child battling a serious illness.
As they cut the birthday cake, Chaim declared happily, “Mommy, birthdays are the best! I wish it was my birthday every day!”
