The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 280

Standing by the window, Vivica had already rehearsed her line. “Of course I was worried. If something happened to you, who else would I have a baby with to save Chaim?”

Hearing the first part of her sentence, Joseph thought she was finally ready to be honest about her feelings. But before he could even savor the moment, she delivered the punchline.

“Vivica, you really know how to push my buttons,” he said, his voice tight.

“How am I pushing your buttons? I’m just telling the truth,” she retorted, her mood lifting as she admired the dazzling lights of Sydville.

“So you’re just using me as a tool now?”

“Weren’t you the one who offered to be a tool, Mr. Baird?” she shot back smoothly.

Joseph gripped his phone, turning to gaze out the car window. They were already on the highway, speeding through the night. Without traffic, he would be in Sydville in an hour. This woman, completely oblivious and thinking she was safe with him so far away, was brazenly provoking him.

A smirk played on his lips. He was already planning how he would ‘deal with’ her when they met.

Sensing his silence, Vivica’s smile faded slightly. “What’s wrong? Are you angry over a little joke? No matter what, I’m truly grateful to you. You’re the greatest benefactor my son and I could ever have.”

Vivica had a soft heart. The moment he went quiet, she immediately tried to smooth things over. She couldn't help it; Joseph had done so much for her. Besides, the man had found a place in her heart, and the last thing she wanted was to actually make him angry.

“I’m not that petty,” Joseph said with a touch of arrogance.

“Of course not. Mr. Baird is a magnanimous man.”

That did it. Vivica was floored. “You—you—” she stammered, the pieces suddenly clicking into place. “So your business trip today was to Sydville?”

“No, the trip was to Glenburgh for the annual dinner. The dinner just ended, and now I’m on the highway to Sydville.”

As he explained, the smile never left his face. The excitement he had been trying to suppress was now rocketing skyward like a roller coaster at the start of its climb.

A high-speed train zipped by on the parallel tracks, and he frowned, momentarily regretting his choice. He would have gotten there faster by train.

Roderic saw the train fly past as well. He glanced at his boss in the rearview mirror and remarked, “There are still late-night trains running between Glenburgh and Sydville. We could have taken one and you would have been able to see Ms. Lynn sooner.”
