“Oh,” Vivica replied, giving the other man a brief nod from a distance. She was getting anxious, worried that Zavier would see Joseph when he arrived at the hotel entrance.
“Well, I’ll let you two get back to your chat,” she said quickly. “My friend is here.”
“Alright. Be safe.”
“I will.”
Vivica hurried toward the hotel doors, pulling out her phone to call Joseph. He answered instantly.
“What’s wrong?”
“Are you here yet?” she asked urgently. “If you haven’t pulled up, just stop on the side of the road. I’ll walk over to you.”
“Why?” Joseph sounded confused. “It’s raining out. Isn’t it better if I pick you up right at the door?”
Raining? Vivica was surprised. It had been sunny all day.
But that was just how the weather was in the south—sunny one moment, rainy the next.
Before Vivica could explain, Joseph spoke again. “I see you.”
Just then, a sleek, understated luxury car pulled up under the hotel awning.
Vivica, who had just stepped through the revolving doors, quickly stepped back to get out of its way.
But then the car stopped, the rear door swung open automatically, and a long, lean leg emerged.
Vivica’s breath hitched. Her heart was already pounding out of rhythm before she even saw his face.
Roderic had no idea what was happening, but seeing her urgency, he turned back around and immediately pulled away from the curb.
Vivica glanced back at the hotel lobby one last time and saw that Zavier had returned to his seat. She wasn’t sure if he’d seen Joseph, but she had a feeling he hadn’t.
Seeing her furtive behavior and remembering her strange phone call telling him to wait on the street, Joseph connected the dots.
“Vivica, are you having some kind of illicit affair?” he demanded, his face dark with anger. “Who are you so afraid will see us?”
Only then did Vivica turn to finally look at him. It had been a few days, and somehow, he seemed even more handsome than before. A faint scent of alcohol hung in the air, but it wasn't unpleasant. In fact, because it was coming from him, she found it strangely alluring. Her heart was still racing as she stared at him.
Their eyes locked for a few seconds before she turned to face forward, her gaze shifting away. “I ran into Zavier in the lobby on my way out. I didn’t want him to see.”
“He’s not your high school principal, and he’s certainly not your father. What does it matter if he sees?” Joseph snapped, refusing to accept her explanation.
