He chuckled. “Can’t do much about that. You wouldn’t want it to stop, would you?”
Vivica was speechless.
“Did you sleep well last night?” Joseph continued, making small talk.
The question made her blush, even with her eyes closed. She’d barely slept, and when she had, it was filled with erotic dreams. Erotic dreams that took place in a car, of all places. And here they were, in a car, nestled so intimately together.
“I slept fine. I was so tired I passed out as soon as I got into bed,” Vivica murmured, lying again.
Joseph’s warm breath ghosted over her forehead as he spoke. “I had insomnia last night. Didn’t get much sleep at all.”
Vivica looked up from his chest. “Why?”
His gaze met hers, her large, sparkling eyes so captivating that he felt the urge to silence her with another kiss.
“Why do you think, Vivica?”
Vivica couldn't hold his gaze and quickly looked down again. “How should I know? I’m not a mind reader,” she mumbled.
But she had a pretty good idea. Her behavior yesterday must have stirred something in him, too. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have kissed her so urgently in the car.
The thought that she wasn’t the only one whose mind had been in a turmoil last night brought a secret smile to her lips.
Joseph saw the slight curve of her lips and seemed to understand. A faint smile touched his own mouth.
They fell silent after that. Listening to the powerful, rhythmic beat of his heart, Vivica eventually fell asleep. And miraculously, her slumber picked up right where last night’s dream had left off, only this time it felt even more real. After all, they were actually in a car, wrapped in each other’s arms.
…
“We have an office in Sydville, but it’s managed by the Glenburgh City branch,” Joseph explained. “The car belongs to one of the partners in Glenburgh. He’s having someone drive it back.”
“Oh,” Vivica nodded, thinking how vast his law firm’s operations were.
...
On the train back to Riverdale, Vivica went back to sleep. She woke up twice, her eyes barely opening. The first time, she saw Joseph was also asleep. The second time, he was awake, his face grim and serious as he worked on a laptop. Even while traveling on business, he was constantly busy.
It was a stark reminder that no one succeeds by chance. People only saw the dazzling brilliance of successful elites, envying their poise and glamour, but few knew about the unseen hard work and sacrifice behind every shining success.
Someone with Joseph’s background might have an easier path to success than most, but the pressure and responsibility he carried were also beyond what most people could imagine. She felt a quiet admiration for him, and a pang of sympathy.
With about two hours left until their arrival, Vivica woke up for good. She didn’t say anything, just turned her head to watch the scenery fly by outside the window. The closer they got to home, the thicker the snow on the ground became.
